Hillsborough again
What do the regulars feel the future hold for Hillsborough? Would it be a good investment to buy a house there...maybe a fixer upper that has good potential? Do you think the market there will continue to stay strong, and do you think it is still "up and coming"..or up?

I live in and love Hillsborough, I consider it somewhat of a hidden gem despite the fact that it was once the capital of the state.
I personally would never buy into a town for an "investment". Buy in if you want to live there, if you like what the town has to offer, the feel of the town, the location, then sure...
No one knows what the future holds but Hillsborough is a small town. Its never going to be a Cary (at least I hope not) but it will always be attractive to folks due to its location close to Durham and Chapel Hill. Good schools, an attractive, thriving downtown, historical character that is hard to match elsewhere, etc....

I didn't know about Hillsborough until after we'd bought in Chapel Hill, but I love it. I can't believe it's as affordable as it is. To me, it's the best town in the Triangle.
Anyway, I think it will go up, but I agree w/bluedevilz that there are no guarantees and I wouldn't buy there (or anywhere) just in hopes of appreciation.

I had a really good chicken and andouille gumbo in Tupelo's on Friday.
Yep. Great investment.
Seriously, I think the desire for quaint and pleasant downtowns will protect your investment in Hillsborough for quite some time.

Good choice on the gumbo
They also have very good red beans and rice and the best fish and chips I've found in the triangle...

Well, going by your name, I'd say you don't get it b/c you like the bigger city life of Raleigh! To someone who loves Raleigh, Hillsborough probably isn't the place to live

Now, now. No reason for name calling.
Not everyone wants the city life (me included). I like to have a few good places to eat, some healthy food options (a la Weaver Street market), some music, a quaint main street, a bit of space, minimal traffic, and to run into people I know around town. I don't need more than that--the rest is just in my way. (In fairness I would never have lived in Hillsborough in my 20s, so maybe it's an age thing!) I won't point out the downsides of Raleigh b/c for many it's great. For many, it's not! To each his own!

I don't care for that area. It's too far from activities & entertainment that we like and it's much too old & behind the times. But a few others love it and I am happy for them.
