There's also a ferry down near Wilmington that takes you to Southport. Drive thru Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and then you'll see it in Fort Fisher. Once in Southport drive into town, quaint little downtown and a great little seafood place called Provision Company. The ferry ride is about half hour/45 minutes. Also, before you get on the ferry there's the aquarium to see. I think this is a great day trip or you can stay in Carolina Beach or Kure Beach, both fairly quiet beaches.

Please do make sure to bring brown bread, not white. Where I grew up the people would feed all the ducks white bread and they were dieing of disease. The white bread doesn't have enough nutrients in them but fills them up so they can't eat anything else.
