Hi,
Does anyone know if any of the downtown redevelopment in Durham is suitable for a family with a young child? We like the urban feel, the ability to walk to things, etc, but we don't want to be surrounded by neighbors who don't want to be bothered by children. Also would be great if some other children were around. Are there many three bedroom condo options downtown?

Thanks!

Upon moving to the area, I looked into some of the loft apartments in Durham (the ones in the old tobacco warehouses). While they were beautiful apartments, and the atmosphere seemed really cool, it just didn't feel like the right place to have our three-year old daughter. Not that it felt unsafe or that the neighbors would be unwelcoming, but I just didn't get the sense that she would really enjoy living there. I think once a kid turns seven or eight, it's probably a more workable arrangement.

There's one 3 bdrm. condo available for sale right now in the Trinity Lofts complex. That number of units is rare DT. I do know that one couple with a child recently moved to Trinity Lofts and are looking to put together a child care co-op.

You might look at neighborhoods like Trinity Park, Watts-Hillandale, Duke Park, Old North Durham -- or at renting a unit in the American Tobacco's Noell building, some of which have a design I could see having kids in.

I know two families with young kids who live at the condos at 500 North Duke Street, and apparently there is at least one another family there with kids.
