What is the actual charge? City code violations are non-moving violations and won't add points to your insurance. If you are charged with speeding AND something else you definitely need to go to court or retain a lawyer. If you PM your name I can look up the charge on the AOC system.

I just got a ticket in Greene County and it is going to be $214.00. You can call the court house, clerk or counrt and ask when the DA is there and either plead the case down to whatever ( I was running 70 in a 55, 1more mih I would have lost my license for 30 days.) TYou need to get him to reduce the speed as in my case to at least 63 in a 55 or a prayer for judgement. Good luck.

That question should be posted in the Iowa forum since the laws and procedures in Iowa are likely going to be different than in North Carolina. It's here:

Never even been in an accident. I've got a stack of advertisements from lawyers wanting to represent me. So should I get a lawyer or should I just pay the fine? All of the lawyer's letters say they will take care of going to court and I don't even have to show up. Is this a good idea? Will it look like I don't care if I don't show up? The problem is I probably wouldn't be able to get off work to go to court. Plus, I don't even live or work in Wake County. So that being said, is it better to hire a lawyer and not go myself, or pay the fine?

Is it too late to get a lawyer -- the court date is July 9th.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you've had a good experience with a lawyer, who would you recommend? I've only been living in the area a year so I'm not familiar with anyone.
For 80 in a 65 they'll suspend your license. I had one. Got a lawyer and it was reduced to broken speedo. No insurance points and a small fine. Learned my lesson!

80 in a 65 would have had my rates go up by 90 percent for 3 years. They don't mess around with speeding here.

I should also mention that I took an online driving class at the request of my lawyer. He said it would show I took it seriously when he asked to have it reduced. The class was pretty straightforward.

From dmv dot org:
Suspended License―Driving privileges are temporarily terminated for a designated period of time; reinstatement can occur at the end of this period, and/or when certain conditions (completion of a driver improvement clinic, proof of auto insurance, etc) are met
Revoked License―Driving privileges are terminated indefinitely with no guarantee of reinstatement.
Canceled License―Driving privileges are void or terminated.

There are certain first-time traffic violations that mandate the immediate loss of driving privileges, and some of these include:

Prearranged racing with another vehicle
Speeding over 75 mph
Passing a stopped school bus
Driving more than 15 mph over the speed limit, if you are driving at a speed higher than 55 mph
DUI
For a more detailed list of these violations, consult North Carolina's driver handbook.
