I thought there was a thread about this already but I could not find it using the search feature. I have an old car that I will no longer need and would like to donate it. The car is not worth much $$ so I doubt it would be an attractive donation to a charity that would look to get money from re-selling it, so I guess I am looking for a charity that provides reliable transportation to people in need.
Here is a brief description which I think help explains why the car is not worth much $$ but may be very valuable to an individual:
It is a 96' Nissan Sentra with a little over 196K miles. The AC comes and goes, it does not have a radio, the rear window leaks when it rains, it is missing both sun visors, and it has body damage on the rear quarter panel and passenger door from a car backing into it. However, the engine is in great shape and the car runs extremely well. It only costs me about $40 a month to insure and the yearly tax bill is bout $33. I bet this car has a few more years of reliable service in it and I think a family in need could be well served by this vehicle to transport them to and from work.
Wheels4Hope is a wonderful local Raleigh non-profit that refurbishes donated cars for low income people's use. Although they cannot guarantee that your car will be able to be refurbished and given to a person in need, they try their best to do so (which maximize your tax deduction). If the car is not able to be refurbished it will be auctioned off.
We donated a 1995 Honda Civic in 2006 and they successfully refurbished it for reuse.
They are a small operation begun as a small mission group at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. This operation really distinguished itself for us because many other charities just auction their donated vehicles off to the highest bidder. We really liked the idea of our car going to a needy family.
Thanks for the tips everyone. I will follow up on your suggestions.
