If any locals have any insight this would be most appreciated. We have lived in New Orleans for the past 10 years and desire to move to the Raleigh/Durham area. We like old historic homes that are walkable to downtown restuarants, bars, parks, grocery, etc... We have had enough of crime from living in New Orleans so we are trying to find something similiar without crime and horrible criminal justice system. It seems Durham is on the very beginning of revitalization. Is the crime as bad as this map indicates on link below in the past two months? How are the public schools? What is downtown Durham like? Is the Mayor a good leader? What other walkable neighborhoods are ideal to live in Durham? What percentage of the Cleveland-Holloway area has come back? Any HONEST feedback welcome. North Carolina seems to have everything we like-Mtns, ocean, good economy, good schools. Durhams seems like an up and coming and in middle of it all.

It looks like there were only four reported crimes in the Cleveland-Holloway historic district during the two month period referenced here: one theft and three drug-related arrests. For an inner-city neighborhood that's socioeconomically diverse, that doesn't seem like a high rate of crime, but that depends on your perspective. I don't think that "without crime" is a realistic expectation for such a neighborhood, really, but I can certainly understand the desire to avoid areas with violent or serious crime.

C-H is walkable to downtown restaurants and bars, but not to a grocery (a common problem faced by many of us who live in central Durham). I have no experience with Durham schools, so I'll leave that topic to others who are knowledgeable!

You may also want to check out Trinity Park, Old North Durham, Duke Park, Watts-Hillandale, and Old West Durham (not an exhaustive list).

Cleveland-Holloway is very safe, and we have a very organized neighborhood association. My SO and I bought in this neighborhood about a little over a year ago and we've had a fantastic time fixing up our home and getting to know our neighbors.

Default Re: Is Cleveland-Holloway safe?

Like any neighborhood, in any urban setting - you may have varying degrees of crime. You can easily verify the dramatic change in the number of reported incidences of crime in C-H, by reviewing police data. However, to your question - it is not the same today as it was even 4 to 5 years ago. This neighborhood is seeing a revival unlike any other in the city. They had a historic home tour in October, 2010 (their 3rd annual) - and the streets were packed with attendees. Many of the homes are occupied by longtime residents, artists, musicians, students, young families, and professionals - who see the value in being walking distance to the downtown scene. Drive through, and you are sure to see strollers parked on porches, children playing in the streets, and friendly neighbors. In particular, visit Mallard, Ottawa, Queen, Primitive, Carlton, and Oakwood Streets - where you'll see great examples of renovated and new homes. A lot has been written about this neighborhood in the last year, so there is plenty of information online for you to read. The neighborhood isn't right for everyone, but it is perfect for many.

No matter what neighborhood you live in, you'll likely have to confront the fact that Durham public schools are less-than-ideal. The C-H neighborhood school is pretty terrible. There are magnet schools and charter options nearby but most are lottery-based.

Oh, please. Let's not generalize. There are some wonderful Durham Public Schools. My child has had a great experience thus far at her elementary school.

It's ridiculous to say that Durham Public Schools are less than ideal. Do you have any experience with DPS?

I'd recommend checking out the website Strong Durham Schools for a rundown of schools in Durham.
