Sandycat... could you give me more info. on the Durham area?? I'm going to look into myself, but I don't know much about the area/the schoos/the c.o.l./etc.
I'm not an expert since I just moved down here at the beginning of the month. But basically teaching in Durham will mean teaching in an urban setting with all its challenges. There are some gangs in the high schools. But from what I've heard from the few people I've met, some of the programs that Durham schools offer are better than other schools, which isn't entirely surprising. We are currently living in Durham (renting an apartment), and we are quite happy here for now. The proximity to everywhere else is great, nothing seems that far from us. Teacher salary in Durham is actually pretty competitive. The sad thing is is that I met other people from Durham who said that they plan to leave before their kids start school. From what I've heard, things are turning around, but these things take time. And I'm not sure what the real issues in Durham are since I just moved here. But they are literally always looking for teachers. Who knows, you might just love teaching here.
Hi, I went to the job fair for elementary candidates. I was number 487 and I was able to have 3 interviews. I just recently moved to Wake Forest from New Mexico (I have a NM teaching license and one in TX). In February I applied for my NC licensure. I was able to get a reciprocal license without having to take the Praxis due to the TX teacher's 'test' being similar to the Praxis. I have K-6 Elementary Ed license and K-12 Reading. The NC Education Dept. was quick! I will let you know when/if I hear back from the schools. Two of the three did not know what positions they would have available yet, but said they would know more by the end of May. My son attends Heritage Elem in Wake Forest, but they have ZERO teaching positions for next year at this time available. They are downsizing because of the new schools taking some of the overflow from this year. Some teachers (I heard) have to go to different Wake County schools. I hear that Franklin County will be hiring a lot of teachers this upcoming year. A friend teaches there. The pay is less than Wake Co, but I don't know by how much. Hope this helps.
