Where to water ski in the Raliegh-Cary area?
My husband and I are relocating and love being outdoors and water skiing. Where are the closest lakes near the triangle to go skiing and are there any water ski clubs?
Thanks

I tend to think that jordan is too small, too busy, and too shallow in some places; head 45 to 90 minutes north (depending on which part of the lake you are going to and where you are leaving from in the area, yes Kerr lake is that big.) Vance County NC Tourism Department
some pronounce it CUR and some pronounce it CAR...Lake

Hyco Lake,Falls Lake, Kerr Lake , Lake Gaston, Jordan Lake, High Rock Lake, Lake Tillery, Baden Lake, Bluett Falls, Tuckertown, Lake Norman and Lake Hickory are all less than three hours from the Triangle. Some much closer. Their are plenty of lake to waterski in around here. You can ski in many of the rivers and also the ICW in NC.

In my opinion, I have skied at Falls Lake, Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston and Kerr Lake is by far the nicest. Kerr Lake is big enough to be able to find nice coves to ski in. Falls Lake gets way too busy on the weekends and its not big enough/deep enough to handle all the people. Kerr Lake is also nice in that there aren't alot of houses on the edge like Lake Gaston. Lake Gaston is very commercialized, Kerr Lake is much more scenic and undeveloped. Kerr Lake is about an hour to an hour and a half drive from Raleigh/Cary area.
If you need a marina, Satterwhite point is great.

Jordan Lake is far from "too small". It is almost 14,000 acres, and is bigger than Falls lake. There are plenty of places to ski. It is busy on the weekend, so I'd go during the week if you can swing it. Kerr is the best choice on a weekend since it is so huge, but I'd hate to drive 90 minutes when Jordan is so close.

I agree. Jordan lake is not small by any stretch. I may be wrong, but either Kerr or Norman is the largest lake in NC.

Norman is the largest one entirely in NC (approx 32,000 acres) and Kerr is the largest overall (50,000 acres) but straddles Virginia.

Thanks. Next Cliff Claven question. Isn't Lake Murray in SC the largest lake in the SE? Or would it be Lake Lanier in Ga?

Well, gee Normie, it's a little known fact that my lake size knowledge is limited to NC. :-)
Looks like you'll have to google that one.
