radmod is on a distinguished road
We have some plants that have done reasonably well. Things that are fuzzy or thick/succulent often work--we have lamb's ear that has thrived, and hens-and-chicks so far have been untouched. Herbs can do well too (we have huge rosemary bushes that they avoid, despite eating things right next to it).

We've had some success also with stakes with fishing wire running about waist-high. Deer don't like walking into things that they feel but can't see (the fishing wire). They knock it down every now and then, though (and the wire has to be a good ways out to prevent them from simply sticking their heads over it).
