Hi everyone,
We have just booked a trip to Raleigh to look around. We are traveling with our two boys, 10 and 6. We are only going to be down for five nights and we really want to get a feel for the area. My husband is possibly getting transferred; he is in sales and mostly works from home so location is not too big of an issue. We would like to visit some areas right outside Raleigh such as Apex, Cary, Wake Forest and Holly Springs. We want to also keep it interesting for the kids. Are there spots that would be good to stop at in these areas such as public parks, playgrounds etc.? We figured we will stay near the Crabtree Mall for a few nights and possibly somewhere else for a few nights to explore different areas. Any suggestions on hotels, food, things to do and see would be greatly appreciated.

The Hampton Inn by Briercreek is almost brand new and a great location with 540 access close by. Can't say enough about that hotel . Try it. Will let you access all of the places you want to visit easily.
In Cary, we like the Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites and the LaQuinta.
Your boys would probably enjoy visiting the Fred G. Bond Metro Park. You can rent paddle boats, sailboats, canoes, etc. and there's a trail around the lake.
In Raleigh, we enjoyed the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Admission to the permanent exhibits is free.

Good access to WF, Cary, Raleigh, N Raleigh, Five Points, Capital Blvd, etc.
The city-center Marriott downtown might be good for being downtown to see Glenwood to Five Points, the city center, getting to the nearby colleges, Cary, etc..
The Marriott across from Crabtree was renovated a few years back, its a good location as well, although traffic on Glenwood there is aweful.
Someone else mentioned Brier Creek, Raleigh/Durham's newest big development.
No matter where you stay, you can get across town in 20 minutes on the outer belts, so you should be pretty free to stay anywhere.
Check out Pullen Park - its typically very busy. There's also Umstead State Park - its huge with two entrances, one off Glenwood/70 and one off 40. There are the museums down town and the Art museum off Blue Ridge - free for normal exhibitions, plus it has a huge park with outdoor sculptures and trails.
Malls in the area include Crabtree (probably the nicest), Triangle Town Center (newest), Southpoint (indoor/outdoor), North Hills (outdoor), and Cary Towne Center.

I assume you are looking for quality lodging, but do you prefer a drive up room or one in which you must walk through a lobby to get to your room? That makes a difference when making suggestions.

We are looking more at a hotel, where you would walk through a lobby.
We stayed in the Embassy Suites in Cary, it was very nice - can't beat the included cook-to-order breakfast and happy hour each evening. We have twin boys age 8 1/2 and a DD age 5 age 5 and we took them golfing, to the US baseball academy, to a Durham Bulls game, to Monkey Joe's etc etc... have fun!
I moved from North Raleigh to Apex about ten years ago. The schools have been great and I much prefer living in a small town. It's hard to explain the difference until you done both. I'd say the small towns along 55- Apex, Holly Spings and Fuquay - have kept much more of their small town character than Cary or Wake Forest.
