Honestly Lorax, I've read ignorant and blinkered comments on this site, but yours is up there with the best of them.
No wonder some of the locals are becoming tired of the transplants. Clearly you have only read about the area in the papers and are only considering coming down here because it is cheap and the weather is nice. Do us all a favor and leave your ignorance in Chicago. Sorry moderator. These people make me mad. |

I chuckled over you wanting to move to the big city. Let's just say our first visit to a museum in Raleigh, we walked around saying, "awe, it's cute...like a baby museum".
Just come and drive around and see what you like. I've noticed a lot of people get flamed for posting a stereotype that we won't admit IS out there. Just over look that and keep asking questions until you find a nice fit for yourself. Maybe we are just cranky because we are not single 20-somethings. |

I didn't say it did. I said it was cute. And I'm not from NYC. How does anyone get any information about moving here on this board between the thin skinned and defensive responses? I guess the goal is to limit growth by scaring away one person at a time? I just hope people get a chance to come and look around for themselves and don't base their opinions of the area on a bunch of bitter displaced northerners on the internet.

Then she didn't want to go out with me! Was I out of line? I was just repeating what I had heard, and wanted to find out if it was true! |

I'm a born and bred North Carolinian and have lived in the Triangle, specifically, for the past 25 years and I can tell you that these particular stereotypes are based on pure reality. They're generalizations but are commonly held beliefs for a reason. It also costs more to live in Raleigh for a reason. When you come to visit, notice where the metal detectors and the barred windows are located. If you're working in the RTP, consider living in the RTP or in Brier Creek. Factor in the price of a gallon of gasoline when you start thinking about long commutes.
Maybe long commutes are necessary in some cities but they really aren't down here. It's easier to commute to your "nightlife" in any of the three downtowns than it is to fight daily cross town traffic. Diversity, in our beautiful state and throughout the southeast, does not require that you go looking for it. It will find you. |
