It's no different than the "Northern Wake Expressway" and the "Western Wake Expressway." All just terms used to refer to parts of 540 in the media - the designations aren't usage on signage.

Where was this and where were you going? I'm not aware of any part of I-40 that goes SW.

40 East runs vaguely SSW between Wade Ave and just before Cary Towne Blvd. Maybe another brief bend or two to the SSW on its way out to Benson, but that's about it.
When I first moved here, I was initially thrown by the signs for the Wade Avenue exit from the Outer Beltline only saying "To 40 West". You can of course get to 40 East from Wade (and that's the way I go, as I exit 40 East at Chapel Hill Road), but there's no signage stating that it's an option until you're practically on top of it.
I understand why it's done, as through traffic on the Outer Beltline looking for 40 East to Raleigh and beyond should continue on until the two meet, but for those of us wanting the 40 East exits at Chapel Hill Road or Cary Towne Blvd, Wade is the way to go.

part 1: yes, but it doesn't help when you locate stuff they're talking about when you only know a road as the rt number because you get on and get off following the signs.
part 2: see my attached pic. i got to the highway on ramps and had to choose. i wanted to go SW, so i chose I40 West. apparently it goes NNE there...

Turnpike Authority receives $386M loan for state's first toll road
Great, this is just what downtown Raleigh needs. Another suburban road to nowhere that helps people live in places like Holly Springs instead of inside of I-440. This is urban planning at its worst and yet another reason why NC is considered to be the "sprawl-topia" of the Nation. Why can't we (North Carolinians) build cities that are "urban minded" like Portland, Oregon? This (the toll road) is bad news for Raleigh's downtown effort. This is a sad day.

Well, look at that. They already sold all the bonds for this project on Monday and Tuesday. I guess this could happen sooner rather than later. Although I am shocked to learn they still have to purchase over 800 acres needed for this project. I wonder if they realize just how confusing it is to the public to have different names for each new leg of I-540. I know it still throws me off.

I guess "phase 1" and "phase 2" would have been alot easier. It must be alot easier to raise money for a fancy project like "Western Wake Freeway"

Oh well, I guess I'll have to recharge my EZ pass for future visits to the triangle to visit my family. Having lived in a state with no toll roads since I left NJ eight years ago, I can't remember where I put it.

I noticed the NCTA is now saying that the favorable bond rates will help pay off the road quicker and end the tolls sooner. They said that in NJ when they built the GSP. Last I heard the folks there are still waiting ....
