Hi All,
I am in the midst of preparing to move down to the North Carolina this coming summer. I am planning on obtaining my Masters in Nursing at UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. What I am looking for is a position in health care in a hospital setting before that I can work at while I am in school. I am not sure where to start with the application process because these jobs are not easily found online unless you specifically no where to look..I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. I am quite open to anything in the field I just would like to gain further experience in the field while obtaining my degree..thank you in advance

What do you mean by, "a position in healthcare in a hospital setting?" Do you have a health background/training already or are you looking for something entry-level? Are you looking for a research/graduate assistantship or a regular position full- or part-time position?

Regardless, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something. I'm surprised that you haven't found the net to be useful--both Duke and UNC Medical Centers have extensive job listings online. Both also sponsor frequent job fairs. I'm an ex-occupational therapist currently working in health care research, and I found my position at Duke via a job fair sponsored by the UNC Department of Public Health. I also had several interviews at UNC Hospital as a direct result of responding to online job listings. UNC's Public Health and Nursing departments should both have websites that list the various fairs and functions they will sponsor throughout the year. Similarly, once you enter the nursing program, you should have access to listings of research/graduate assistantships that, in addition to experience and income, may actually include some tuition relief. I'd check with individuals in the nursing department for more information about things like that.

Have you been accepted yet at Chapel Hill? Both Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill medical centers have online employment links.

Lightbulb Application info

To get a masters in nursing, you'll need undergrad degree and experience. You may be able to get an entry level medical assisting position. Many outpatient clinics will train the right person. Your best chance would be to apply to any applicable jobs on the online sites (duke, unc). The sites will allow you to apply for more than one with your application which can save time. Be wary, though...apply for positions for which you are qualified. We can see all the positions applied for when pulling applications, and if you're all over the place that is one factor used when considering to review data further.

I actually am coming down there with a degree in degree in Communications. I have only been out of school for a few years. The program I will be entering is the accelerated BSN at UNC where you can become an RN in 14 months. I would like to then continue on with my masters degree at that point.

I would like to have a job in a health care facility to gain further experience prior to entering the program. I am open to anything that might be offered so we will see..
thank you for the advice i will keep you posted.

Not sure what your plans are. If you have experience, I would highly recomend do a travel nurse contract. Its a no brainer if you ask me. You are unsure of where to work? Don't know the area and looking for a good hospital or health care facility that works best for you. Travel nursing firstly takes care of your housing! and Im a former travel nurse and they put you up in great places. If you take a 3 month contract and the hospital or unit is not right for you, then you leave. There is no commintment, no orientation, no political mess for leaving a place early if you had of taken the job full time. To me its the by far the best option. It gets you in the area, see where you want to live, no lease to worry about, and gets you there to see where you might want to work full time.
If you are unsure about travel info and need advice, just post a reply back.
