Also, only Catholics require actual wine....

But it's common practice for many (and really even Catholics don't "require" it). And there are other denominations around besides Catholics and Southern Baptists.

Hopefully by that you mean there aren't a lot of them and not that they don't like them...

and no Parish would run out of wine at the last minute.

Odds are not but it's possible. My point is there is no value added, certainly not a religious one, to this stupid law.

wine tastings are allowed and if you read the N&O this weekend - they are working on allowing beer tastings (which would be great for our local breweries!).
|
? On Sundays, I assume you mean. Wine tastings are all over the place, as are beer tastings. In fact rthe wine biz is really growing in NC.

Hopefully by that you mean there aren't a lot of them and not that they frown on them ie that whole RCC vs Baptists BS.

Where have you seen a beer tasting in a store? It's currently illegal. Wine tastings have been legal since 2001...NOT beer...so I really doubt you've seen them.

Reason: Edited to correct year...wine samples have been legal since 2001...not 2000.

So 11:50 I can't buy booze, but come afternoon (when I'm more likely to drink anyway) I can get all I want.
PS this also means if a church realizes on Sunday AM it's out of wine for communion, no quick trip to the store to cover it, they're hosed. Way to support religion NC!

I agree, its arbitrary, ridiculous, and tied to old tenets of propriety at the expense of productivity and freedom of choice. Limiting the sales of alcohol on Sundays serves no purpose.

I hate this law too... a few months ago we were at BJ's doing some grocery shopping and had a bottle of wine in the cart. We checked out with no problems, and then the person at the door was like "you can't leave the store with this for another 4 minutes, and you have to go return it actually as well because you shouldn't have been sold it". So yes, we had to return it, then wait another 4 minutes to buy it. Failure.

Until the law changes if you know about it now then start buying extra on Saturdays. It's not really that difficult. Sure I think it's stupid but there are worse laws out there more inconvenient to us (like no texting while driving....WTF??!! )

I only got tripped up by this law once in my four years here. It really isn't all that difficult to work around. I do agree that the state (and this a state issue by the way) should repeal this antiquated law, but in light of the more pressing issues going on at the General Assembly (like passing a state budget) I can see why this isn't high on their list of things to do.

When I was living in Montgomery County Maryland, I could buy beer/wine in the grocery store ANYTIME on Sunday. Drive a little further to Howard County, you can get it in the liquor store actually open on Sunday. In neighboring Prince Georges County - you can't buy on Sunday at all. you get used to it and start buying on Saturday.... it doesn't hurt to plan to buy on Saturday.
I think the law is funny - people should be able to buy beer, wine, liquor whenver they want any day or any time of day. I don't get the point of banning it during certain days/times. Probably has something to do with an antiquated way of life.

I moved to the triangle from that area about 5 years ago. You couldn't even get an alcoholic drink at a restaurant on Sundays in most areas. NC was downright liberal. I knew lots of people who crossed the line to get beer on Sundays.
Alcohol wasn't the worst part to me. Other than grocery stores or gas stations, no store could open before 1:30 pm on a Sunday. I actually remember having to drive from Anderson to Greenville one Sunday morning just to get an emergency plumbing part, because Home Depot couldn't open until 1:30. Walmarts, with both a grocery section and a general merchandise section, had to rope off the general merchandise section from midnight til 1:30 pm on Sundays as well.
