If so, how was it? What is the set up like? Does it get crowded? My wife and I are thinking of heading over there today to hear some free music and I was hoping to get the skinny on what it is like.
I've been several times to FOFP, so I can provide a bit of info.
I love live music, especially outdoors, so I've always enjoyed my trips to the Carolina Inn. My husband isn't as much of a music fan as I am, but he's also enjoyed the setup as well. It's a neat community event that draws all ages and types of people. You'll see young and old, families and single people, medical center personnel and students, and all other types of people.
The entire front lawn of the Inn will be filled with people, but I've never found it to be overwhelming. They have several chairs out near the band, but bringing your own chairs is a good idea to ensure that you have them. In my experience, the 6 - 7 p.m. hour is the most crowded. It builds before then and tapers off afterward.
Kids are definitely welcome and often gather in front of the band to dance and entertain the adults. It's quite fun.
Drinks are available (cash bar), as is a buffet style dinner (not sure how much it costs). Tables for eating or socializing are usually set up on the side of the lawn opposite the band.
Overall, it's a good time. I would suggest checking it out!
gosh I never heard of a dress code at an outdoor venue and especially not in Chapel Hill but I guess some folks like to dress up no matter what. We go for comfort at our house.
Besides, I found these pics (http://www.blackswampbootleggers.net/gallery06-ci/index.html - broken link) of a past show online. Looks like most people are wearing "Daily Duds" to me.
Most people are wearing daily duds, NRG--it's the (presumably) frat boys and sorority girls out to impress each other who seem to get dolled up. And there are some traditional southern types who actually do wear seersucker and whale-print pants (no, I'm not exaggerating). But I'm never uncomfortable, and I'm a schlubby sahm.
It's a good event. You can bring a blanket and sit on that if you like. There is no dress code, but the SES seems on the high end. I think the dinner is $12. My 3 year old always has a nice time.
