commuting from fayetteville
hi Folks
I am currently looking to move from New York to fayetteville where I was offered a good job.My husband however will only be able to find a job in Raleigh. My job requires me to live only in Fayetteville.I would like to know if the commute from Fayetteville to Raleigh everyday for my husband is a doable thing. Our entire decision to move from New York to North Carolina with 2 kids is dependent on this.We are not familiar with NC and the daily traffic there and would really appreciate your help in this matter.

It wouldn't be the worst commute I've heard about....but it would be well over an hour each way at the very least...and with traffic...well....wow.
Would it really be worth for you husband to work in Raleigh? Could he maybe find something in Fayetteville? Even if it paid a bit less, by the time you factor in the time and gas money...it might not be that much less.

From what I've heard, Fuquay-Varina and areas right around that "splits the difference" between RTP and Fayetteville, in terms of commute. Perhaps Sanford, too?
I have a co-worker in a similar boat (one in Fayetteville, one in Durham), and they're currently near Southern Pines. It's taking the one with the Durham commute about 90 minutes each way.

Tell me about Raleigh-Durham
I would like to know about Raleigh and the surrounding areas: I am interested in housing, employment, high schools, weather and low crime. If anyone has any information or thoughts along these lines please let me know. Thank you

Would you have to actually live IN Fayetteville, or just near Fayetteville? My folks live there, and when we visit from Raleigh, it takes us between an hour and 15 min to an hour and a half to get there. And that's not during rush hour... Sanford is a good choice in the middle, if you can get away with not living in town.
I also am curious what makes Raleigh the only option for your husband - your question intrigues us, do tell!

It takes us less than 30 minutes to get to Fayetteville from here in Sanford and we have many commuters. It takes us 35-40 minutes to south Raleigh or Cary. Sothern Pines is a nice retirement community some 25 minutes from Fayetteville. Work opportunities depending...

commuting from fayetteville
thanks for all the replies to my post.My job mandates that I live only in Fayetteville and my husband is an IT manager and recently finished his MBA so he would find a suitable b job only in Raleigh-Durham area, which is why I want to know if he can do the daily commute from Fayetteville to the Reseach Triangle area.Much as I would like to live somewhere in between,I simply cannot...

MY dad has a co-worker that commutes from Fayetteville to Raleigh every day and its about 1.75 to 2 hours each way for him. As others have said, the drive (like when we visit family down there) is usually about 1 to 1.25 hours from Garner (SE Raleigh) to Fayetteville. Traffic will easily add 30 minutes to an hour. If he is having to go all the way to Durham then it could be longer, depending on when he needs to be at work. The guy next to me drives from Fuquay to North Raleigh and it takes him one hour to get to work. There are more and more tech companies spreading out from the Triangle so there is hope that he can land a job closer to home.

There is a bypass being built around Sanford that will make some things easier. Depending on your position in Fayetteville there are options for such a commute. 401 is the most common. 95 to 40 is being used. 421 through Llillington can be efficient. 87 through Sanford to US1 is going to be pretty good soon.
Some of my friends in IT have jobs bassed in Raleigh but are not required to be there every day. One works online for Cisco Systems the other is a troubleshooter for Hospital IT systems and travels almost daily aroung the east coast.
Best wishes for your decision.
