I guess for those folks a death in the house would have actually *increased* market value!

Big difference. The Peterson house is subject to the news/media showing up and having been on TV 24/7 for months.....the house in this thread is some random home in NC. Different factors IMO.

You can't find anything online b/c the police aren't really allowed to post names of people that killed themselves to the media. That would stink if you mom or dad commit suicide and it's plastered all over the news. I don't think that's a real reason not to buy a house.

Seems like everybody has their own opinion, and they are all vastly different. For what its worth. Here is our recent story. My family and I were living out of state, and home hunting from afar. We were reguarly communicating with our agent and came down several weekends to look at homes, which is not what we wanted to do. We were just having difficulty finding the right home. A home I had liked and had been watching, but was pretty far out of our price range, overnight dropped $50K. I immediately arranged a trip, even though it was inconvenient. Our agent went over and got photos and walked through it. He said, "You'll love it. This is what you like." So, we even secured financing in case we were to make an offer. Just before leaving town, my husband called a friend he works with long distance to tell them what we were doing. Something stood out to him about what my husband was saying. He checked his suspicions online. Sure enough, it was the Cooper home, the "Cary jogger's" home. When I found out, I was immediatley, very disappointed. I was so saddened when I had read this story a year earlier. We did deicide to go see the home anyway, since we already had the trip arranged. In the end, although we did like the home, we had some concerns about its history. More than that, my husband had serious concerns for me. He knows my sensitive (not suspicous) nature, and he knew that down the road, this fact of the home would be an issue for me. Now, the trial hasn't taken place yet, and the home may not really be the "place" of any event that was bad. However, for us, it was enough. We are not suspicous, and home is just a home. However, being a wife and mom, and knowing some of that sad story, was more than we wanted to "bear" in homeownership. Just my opinion.

I hope you got another agent after that!! I'll bet he knew who's house it was and the fact that he didn't at least give you the courtesy of knowing the recent events surrounding that house....it would just make me feel that he was just in it for a sale....rather than truly helping me find the best fit for me and my family!

city-data - definately not boring!

OP - Don't buy the house. I don't believe in ghosts (the bible teaches us that once we're dead, we're gone, heaven or hell, unless Jesus brings us back and since this isn't the second coming, I don't think we have to worry about that.) I do believe in respecting other people's fears. If you feel the event will affect how people will interact with you and your kids and it bothers you, you shouldn't buy the house. Everyone on this thread could tell you it's ok and your just being rediculous and it would make you feel better. You would buy a sweater from a second hand shop that someone killed themselves in would you?

Old homes - My house in WI was built in 1922 and is a duplex, I don't want to know what happened in it because it's creapy, not "I think there's a ghost" creapy, more like, "I don't want to know you just killed a cochroach in the living room" creapy...

Do you believe in GHOSTS?
Why is everyone all over the OP's case? I can admit, it seems a little on the dramatic side, but he/she is entitled to their feelings and while many here say it doesn't matter, I know there are plenty of other people who it would matter to.

A home is a large purchase and one should feel completely comfortable with the transaction and thought of dwelling there. If the OP doesn't feel great with the idea of owning and living in the home, then they are correct to walk away.

Telling someone they shouldn't feel uneasy with living in this home is like telling some people that they shouldn't fear black snakes because they are harmless and keep the rodent population under control.
