For decades, thousands of transplants have flocked to the Triangle, many lured by jobs with major employers such as IBM.
More recently, financial firms Fidelity and Credit Suisse are transferring employees from New York and Boston.

Good article! Thanks for sharing. Now that my husband and I have kids we could not relocate w/o a job. COULD.NOT.DO.IT! I know some people do. But we are not that adventurous.
It's also interesting that the article points out that a less expensive house and warmer weather are not everything.
We want to relocate because we don't have much family left in MA and CT. We already have family in NC and FL. Only my father and my husband's parents are still in New England. And they plan on leaving in 5 years when they retire.
I happen to be one of those transplants who arrived here jobless. In hindsight it is not something I would ever do again. The job search here has been very difficult so far. There are not many positions for what I do, so as a result, I may have to up and move again to someplace like Atlanta.
The problem is that it can be difficult to do a long distance search when you are working hundreds of miles away in a full time position. Plus, trying to time the sale of your current house, with starting a new job and purchasing a new house elsewhere presents many challenges. In my case, I wanted to get my NJ condo sold quickly, before the market turned downward. Had I waited until after I found a job here, I would not have made as much money, and it would have taken significantly longer to sell my NJ home.

Anyway, I am glad to see that I'm not alone!
May I ask what field you are in? My husband is in the IT field...more specifically he is a Manager over help desks and field techs and for various state departments. We are trying to decide if he should stay here and work and I move down with the kids or should he come with us. We would be ok for a bit and he can really work anywhere and there is also contract work...I work in the admin field and there seems to be alot of jobs for that.
I came here jobless... and I'm starting to regret it! I'm a lawyer with an IT background, and I can't even get a job at Staples. Seriously... I've looked for legal jobs, a job in teaching (which is really what I want to do, but that's a diatribe for another post!), and any sort of full or part time temp or office work. I'll take anything, really.... I just need to pay the bills. But I've been here for about a month, and so far, nothing at all. I've scheduled a full-on panic attack for May 15th. Until then, I keep looking...
This situation doesn't surprise me at all. Sure, this is an attractive place to live but there just isn't a new biotech company or IT company springing up everyday to satisfy the job requirements of many northern transplants. If anything, constant big Pharma re-orgs and outsourcing are making decent jobs in this region even harder to come by.
I also know of some folk who have bought a characterless McMansion in two-pet Cary, for cash, and continue to live off the equity generated from the housing boom in the North and West coasts. I wonder how long this situation can continue??

A month? That's nuthin'! My wife has been looking for 9 months. All she's had so far is a 2 month temp position. May I suggest trying some of the temp agencies? My wife posted her resume on Monster etc and she gets multiple calls a day from temp agencies. You have to separate a lot of chaff from the wheat, but get enough of them looking for you and you may get something. Just remember to updated it every few weeks or it goes "stale" and they stop looking at it.
That's how I found my job here. I'm in SW development and I had to take a 6-month temp position to get my foot in the door at my target company. Then then hired me full-time after the contract was over.
What posesses otherwise sensible people to move without a job? If you're 22 and fresh out of college then maybe but if you have a family and/or a decent job somewhere else then you'd be a fool to move without a job. I wish that these magazines would quit listing Raleigh among their "Top 10 cities for *fill in the blank*".

Unless you attended to a top law school and worked in Big Law then a legal job is going to be hard to come by. NC currently has a population of ~8 million people, 5 law schools, and 2 or 3 more law schools in the works. NC law schools churn out more than enough new laywers than are needed to meet demad. Teaching on the other hand holds some promise.
I cannot understand the moving without a job issue. It is just not prudent. I will not sell my home or put down an offer on one till hubby picks which position he wants. He is in final negotations with several companies. SO if people told you that you could not find a job if you were not in NC they are not correct. Use a headhunter. Mkae phone calls to every headhunting agency in the triangle if you have to. I know there was a seemingly kind individual on this forum advertising their own company had a few jobs. When it came down to asking for the name of the company this person became nitpicky, argumentative and not forthcoming. I think they was fishing to see the competition. When you are dealing with anyone outside of an official hiring capacity even on this forum, do not take any unsolicited job advice, even the info I have given, do your due diligence and homework. The friendly forum person may just not be a good source for your particular occupation. To tell anyone they are not going to find a job in IT, teaching or law is just arrogant. Do not trust anyone with your career status other than someone qualified. No one knows you here other than your nickname. They have no idea what your skillset is. For them to presume to know anymore is just horrific to me.
