Default Say goodbye to the "Inner" and "Outer" Beltline

It looks like they will be replacing the signs on the 440 Beltline soon to read "East" and "West". I wonder if that will reduce the confusion? It didn;t take me very long to figure the beltline out when I moved here, but some people do seem to struggle with it.

I did find the "Inner" & "Outer" signs a bit confusing, but I got it now. Now I'm going to be super confused.

I saw that on the news yesterday. I've just stayed away from 440. Maybe I will understand "east" and "west" better than "inner" and "outer".

From I-40 E to Poole Road, you will travel east to go west...

Take THAT, GPS!

As a former Raleighite, I am happy to hear it. Unless you know WHERE you are in relation (geographically) to where you WANT to go in relation to 440, "inner" and "outer" is utterly ASININE. At least east and west is more generally understandable.

At the end of the day, it's a loop, and you'll eventually get to where you want to go, but it was d@mn annoying to constantly have to draw a map in your head while you're driving and hoping you can figure it out before you have to choose an exit.

how in the heck does East/West make more sense ON A LOOP?????? Inner and Outer make perfect sense to me. Inner means you're moving clockwise, Outer means you're driving counter-clockwise. Pretty Easy.

So if I get onto I-440 coming from Durham on I-40 and I go onto what WAS the Inner Beltine (which would take me North towards Crabtree and other stuff), what's it gonna be labeled now? East? What's it called when I get to the other side heading southwest kinda towards Hwy 1? Still East?

This is about as smart as what they're doing out in Greensboro with that new freeway addition that goes from I-85 back up to I-40. It WAS I-40 and the old section was changed to Business 40, then they decided they didn't like that. Now the signs are all conflicting which has to make the area an absolute nightmare to anyone who doesn't know what's going on.

Cripes!

Mike

I just moved here recently, and agree that inner & outer make much more sense. I've finally got it down pat and they are changing it lol.
