I was at a subdivision party recently in Durham (Forest Hills).
They had 2 face painters there and it was pretty neat.

The company was Paint Savvy.

How about everyone pitch in for a DJ? Different games would be fun for the kids and adults. I do like the themes also. Everyone bring a cover dish also.

We had a community pool where I grew up. Every year, a CLEAN UP day was held to prep the pool (painting, raking leaves, etc) and everyone pitched in. The next weekend was the celebration. We had a huge BBQ, lobster, etc and had tons of water races enjoying the pool. Relays for the kids and adults together. Watermelon tag or whatever it was called. We divided into 2 teams and they greased up a watermelon with vaseline and tossed it into the pool. First team to get it out of the pool won. As you can imagine, it took forever as the melon just squirted through everyone's hands.

It went on all day and into the night with music and beer for the adults. Great memories.

One idea a neighbor was tossing around was where apparently some community(ies?) did a mobile martini party, where they pulled the supplies on a wagon, and went from house to house getting people to join them. They would chat in the driveway then move on to the next house (but everyone knew it was going to be happening). Then they ended up at some community location.
