My husband is a hunter and there seems to be a lot of state game land in the area. I think there is some state land near Wake Forest.
You should get a copy of the game regs. Dick's Sporting Goods has a copy. it will have all the state land information.

I live on .2 acres and there are literally two or three deer in my yard twice a week or more. They eat my plants, nasty buggers. You wouldn't think that in a suburban neighborhood you'd see so many, but they're not even afraid when I come out of the house into the yard. They snort at me. I think they have evil intentions!

There is limited deer hunting weekdays only in Duke Forest through (I think) the first week in December. Not sure what permits, etc required but we went there for a weekend hike and noticed the signs.
