Default Semi-rural Durham

I am asking this for a friend: Can someone tell me any parts of Durham where you can get 5-10+ acres of land (and a house!), be within about 20 min. of Chapel Hill, safe area? NOT any kind of development like Treyburn or any of those piled on each other. Price range up to about $1Million but preferably around $500K. Would be doing private schools, so school district not an issue.

Thanks!

Good luck with this one. Maybe the Bahama area?? Every area I can think of that used to be remote is being developed.

In my (humble) opinion, the best rural area to live for access to Durham and Chapel hill is the area roughly boxed off by Erwin Rd, NC-86, I-40 and I-85/US70. There's some real pricey subdivisions in there, some cool old subdivisions in there, some estates (Renoylds Price and Coach K) and alot of land. Safety is a non issue. If your friend doesn't want a neighborhood, theres likely something there for them.

If they only want proximity to Chapel Hill, a great place to look is west of Chapel Hill in the Orange County School district. Some really pretty rural properties out there that don't go for a premium. About 30 min drive to Durham though

I should add that my definition of real pricey is $500,000 and up, which apparently isn't real pricey any more :-)

Good point. How about if I open this up to Chatham County as well? It's really teh proximity to Chapel Hill she wants (w/o paying Chapel Hill prices as she'll be sending her kids to private school...).

Thanks!

There is a development off of O'Kelley Chapel Road called Rosemont (or something like that) that is in far northern Chatam County. It is a stones throw from Durham County and probably 15-20 minutes from Chapel Hill. It is a subdivision, but has large lots (at least 3+ acres).

The other place to look is on the edge of Durham and Orange County around the Whitfield Road, NC-86, Turkey Farm Road area.

My parents live in Chatham county now, in a neighborhood called Arbor Lea. They have 5 acres out there but some plots have up to 10. I know there was one lot left (it's a pretty small neighborhood) but this house is for sale there:

(sorry for the huge link). The neighborhood is absolutely beautiful. Arbor Lea is right off of 15-501, 10 minutes from UNC & Chapel Hill at the most. Highway 64 isn't far, either. However, there aren't many children around because there aren't a lot of homes (off the top of my head, I think there are 12?)

Down the road from their neighborhood, another area of land (about 25 acres) is being sold off in lots of at least 3 acres.

Good luck to your friend!

My sister built a home in Chatam Co recently ... 5 acres and the house and it was well under 500K. BUT she's in Moncure.... which is more than 20 mins to Chapel Hill. Googlemaps states its 26.8 miles and 46 mins to CH. I understand the closer you get to CH the more expensive Chatam Co is.

Check the southwest area of Durham. Down where Wake, Chatham and Durham counties intersect. Grandale road was just finished heading out towards Cary. Near hills of rosemont. It's far enough to get good land, but still close to everything.
