Default Is there always this much lightning in Raleigh?

I grew up in NYC, lived in Savannah, GA for 4 years and just moved to Raleigh about 5 weeks ago. I love it here. My family has a lovely house, the people are very friendly, and there is a lot to do.

But man have there been a lot of severe storms since we got here. I knew there was a risk of hurricanes, but I had no idea that there would be insane electrical storms every other night. I thought there was a lot of that in Savannah, but I've seen more lightning in 5 weeks here than I saw in a year in Georgia.

And I'm being told this isn't even the "heavy" season for electrical storms. What's the deal? Is this par for the course?

I have two dogs who freak out whenever they hear thunder, and at this rate I am going to have to start medicating them. Please tell me this recent spate of weather is abnormal for this area.

Yep, I would like to know the answer to this also! Ok, how far is Charlotte from Raleigh? Is Charlotte getting the same now? (Just curious)

I'd be medicating myself too! and putting my house for sale.

Hopefully someone will tell you this is not normal. I heard about this there though.

You're so funny, I'm telling you, we're going to need to have storm parties just to get through these!

It better not. I may have to take my chances with the Phx serial shooter and the serial raper.

The N part of Charlotte gets less boomers than the south according to my reasearch. That's one of the reasons I nix Ft Mill and Tega Key.
I looked at the tornado map and the severe weather stats. Plus I talked to some long time residents.

Raleigh had bad stats altogther.

According to the NC State Climate Office, the most severe thunder & lightning storms occur in North Carolina's Sandhills region. This would be parts of Richmond, Scotland, Moore, Hoke, Lee and Harnet Counties. For general reference, this would be the areas around Rockingham, Hamlet, Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Laurinburg, Carthage, Sanford, Lillington and Raeford, NC.
