The latest numbers are in and NC's average fell by one point.
Chapel Hill/Carrboro Schools continue to lead the state with an average score that remained steady at 1179.
Wake Co. scores grew by 14 points to 1073: tying for 3rd highest average in the state. That's quite a remarkable metric for the largest system in the state!
Orange County scores dropped by 4 to 1039
Johnston County scores dropped by 3 to 1016
Durham County scores dropped by 2 to 965
So, for all the bashing Wake County Schools endures on this forum, the proof is in the pudding.
As I said on another forum, I scored a 1350 on my SAT, 15 years ago. I don't know WHAT anyone is crowing about, be it WCPSS or otherwise. Especially when it is no secret that the SAT has been dumbed down over time.
rnc2mbfl, I know you are the stat person. Any chance you have a link that has those SAT scores broken down by demographics? I like to drill down for more data.... that's where I get my pudding.

OOPS!!! I just realized that I linked the Webex session I was attending early tonight instead of the story. Here's the link to the story. http://www.newsobserver.com/news/education/story/1661610.html (broken link)
Near the end, you'll find a school by school breakdown link.
Enjoy your pudding!!! :-)
Ahh, statistics. I just love the debates the erupt around trends in average SAT scores, as if one number tells the entire story.
For example, I noticed that the percentage of students in Wake County taking the test fell this year, from 73.6% to 67.1%. What impact do you think that has on the average? Do you think that it was more higher-performing typically university-bound students who didn't take it this year, or maybe lower-income, marginally-performing ones? If it was the latter, do you think maybe the average went up not because of stronger overall test performance but instead because fewer low-performing students took it?
I don't know the answers, but I am reasonably confident that pointing at the single average score and claiming it tells the entire story is probably not accurate.
The SAT is scored differently than it was 15-20 years ago. Back in the day, a 1300 put you in the top 3% or so in the nation- now it's more like top 20%. I know that things change, but if you are an oldster like me, and a kid tells you he got a 1300 you have to know that the score has a totally different meaning now!

My sister graduated in 2006 and they changed the scores to go up to 2400 if I remember right. These scores shown are back to the lower scale of when I went to school that went up to 1600. So I assume they changed them back to 1600?
