As population increases, taxes go up. There was a story on the news last night about increases in Wake taxes and how it was inevitable and and will continue.
Much of that is directly due to refurendums that were voted on and passed by good margins with the understanding that taxes would go up. Not sure what argument there is against it after the fact.
As the city continues to grow and more resources are needed for schools, transportation etc..., Raleigh's tax rate/COL will eventually catch up with the rest of the US.

After the vote.... Before the paying
I just don't think there is a tax the voters would say no too if bundled with the typical liberal promises

Raleigh/The Triangle is pretty much on-par with "average" COL right now. It's associated with the "bargain" concept because many of the folks moving here are coming from some of the most expensive places in the country.
NC is pretty much middle of the pack on overall tax-burden too. We are only considered "low tax" by people coming from NY, NJ and CA which are very high-tax states.
I believe we actually rank higher than Massachusetts in overall tax burden believe it or not.

This is the fiction right...rest of the US...hmmm
New York ?
LA?
We are prob already a tax leader in the SE
Anyway this will all be fine assuming house prices sustain and the economy doesn't crash but this dove tails with a few other discussions right...is Raleigh sustainable to the middle class... People moving here to ESCAPE taxes
IMO transplants beware Raleigh aspires to world class city amenities and a tax can't lose to climb that ladder. Not sure how confident we will be the result won't be the somewhat boondoggled transport like in Charlotte and Atlanta

This. And it's been this way since at least 2012. We knew when we moved here from Phoenix in 2012 that the COL was higher here than what we were used to. Our prooerty taxes more than doubled on a simarly valued home. Our water bill more than doubled (admittedly, we have more grass, but Phoenix is the desert with suppised water shortages.) The electric company charges more per kilowatt hour. Most of the groceries cost more (pork being a notable exception). And don't get me started on the asinine alcohol and happy hour rules.
We definitely don't view this area as low COL, but certainly understand why our neighbors who relocated from NY and NJ think it's pretty cheap here. It's all about perspective.
Taxes is Wake county are extremely low. Nobody likes paying more, but you have things pretty good compared to nearby counties and extremely good compared to most of the country. The tax increases you should be worried about are coming from the legislature as "fees" and sales taxes. You should also expect to pay higher property taxes in the future as a result of passing the buck to local communities. You'll pay lower income taxes though. Hope you have enough income for it to all work out.
