Why have you ruled out public school for your 5 year old?

Check out Woodstone at Croasdaile Farm apartments, which is pretty close to Durham Regional. You might also check out the Watts-Hillandale and Trinity Park neighborhoods. I don't know about the private schools, so can't help on that front.

There are several private schools in the area, so it depends what you want. If you are only thinking of private school for the kindergarten year, I'd probably look at some of the church-run preschools, which typically include a half-day Kindergarten program. I've generally heard good things about Westminster, Epworth, and Duke Memorial. If you think you might stay in private school long-term, try one of the K-8 or K-12 schools: Triangle Day School, Duke School, Durham Academy, Cresset Christian, Trinity, Immaculata. There are also a number of Montessori programs in the area.

One good resource is the NC Association of Independent Schools website: www.ncais.org.

As for food markets, most of them are safe. I like Harris Teeter, but I also pick some items up at Food Lion or Kroger.

Good luck with your move!

There are some new apartments right across the street behind where the Lowe's Home Improvement is, and there's a school called Voyager Academy you could look into.

Default be very careful with apartments

there are alot of apartment complexes around DRH (to stay out of trouble, i wont name them) that are very affordable but not in safe neighborhoods. someone mentioned apartments behind lowes...not terribly safe in my opinion. voyager academy is for 4th through 8th grade.

Would recommend checking the apartments around Durham Regional Hospital, but to expand your search toward Guess Rd. and maybe around Duke. These will keep you in the 10-15 min commute range with plenty of private schools to choose from. You may want to check with the hospital as well on preferred apartment complexes. Good luck
