What other neighborhoods or towns would be an alternative to Chapel Hill? By alternative, I mean not as expensive for a home?

How are the public schools there? I have an 8th grader and a 3rd grader. Seem to read a lot of great things about Wake Schools, but the neighborhoods sound "suburbia". I like the idea of an area that is more easy going/laid back and not so conservative, but I do have concerns about crime rates and schools because of my kids. Right now we live in Texas and in our town the schools are excellent but the community as a whole is not very diverse or tolerant. My husband may be getting transferred near the Raleigh-Durham Airport area. If we move, we would like to move somewhere where people are a little less "redneck".

No offense to those of you who are proud of that, I've been your neighbor here in Texas for ten years and have been pretty tolerant. Its just that with this move, we would really like to usher in a new breath of fresh air, and start again some where a little more moderate and relaxed.

The Triangle is not known for its redneckyness.

The rest of the Triangle: Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Wake Forest, etc.

I have read some posts that say that some areas of Durham and Raleigh are not very good. Since these seem to be pretty large cities, how do I narrow down the regions that are safer family neighborhoods

I don't think your request is very clear. What are you looking for as an alternative? Is it just cheaper housing? If so, anywhere is an alternative to Chapel Hill. Is it another area with really good schools? Carrboro is in the same school district, and has a variety of housing options. There are areas within Wake County that have very good schools too.

None of the main points of the Triangle are "rednecky" at all. The suburbs of Raleigh and Cary might lean Republican, but it's mostly "country club" Republicanism, i.e. well-off families who vote with their pocketbook but are generally socially libertarian (of course there are individual exceptions anywhere you go). By and large there are no "firebrand" conservatives like you would have seen in Texas, in the suburban neighborhoods of Raleigh, Durham, Cary, or Chapel Hill. Garner is the most "rednecky", if you will, but more in the sense of "down home", not "hillbilly redneck".

To answer your question, Carrboro, Hillsborough or Pittsboro are the closest "cultures" to Chapel Hill.

I think Durham will fit your needs well. Look for houses in the Jordan or Riverside High School and Forest View/Easley Elementary school districts.
