Default Millstone Orchard in Ramseur, NC--went apple picking today!

I posted a query about apple picking earlier this week and another poster asked me to post about my experience. We went to the Millstone Orchard in Ramseur, NC--about an hour from my Morrisville home. It was a pretty, pleasant drive.

We got there and the first thing I noticed was there were really not very many trees--a row or two of several varieties. Last time I went apple picking it was 10 years ago up in New England and before that in the VA mountains, and both times the "orchards" had hundreds of trees. This one seems to have maybe 100? Max?

Anyway, the down side was that the trees were REALLY picked over--we had to reach high to get almost anything. There were lots of rotten apples hanging on branches or on the ground. The paths between rows were full of weeds. I picked a bunch of fujis that I didn't realize were red fujis and they're very green, so I guess not ready. I wish we had some guidance for where to go. When we arrived the place had been open no more than an hour and it was crawling with people!

The up side: it's a beautiful drive, and there's plentiful fruit to be purchased in the store. We found some apples on 3 trees that looked great right before we got done. They have a large open space with picnic tables and tire swings, and I saw some folks having a picnic and letting the kids play--that is a great idea!

The store has apples for sale, ice cream that looked pretty good, and these AMAZING apple cider slushees that are like good-for-you slurpees, only tastier. They were soooo good. People seemed very friendly, and it seems like a good all-around family-friendly activity if you don't mind making an hour trip each way.

I wish we lived closer to a BIG orchard like I went to growing up. I miss those experiences!

Anne, thanks for posting. As I mentioned, we're going with 2 other couples next weekend. Maybe we should rethink this trip.....

A friend of mine went last week, and she echoed your thoughts, it was picked over. She thought she would go earlier next year. She is from upstate new york and realized she had to adjust her expectations next time she goes!

Her kids had a great time though.

You can force the issue and grow apples around here, but you really are not in apple country. Go further west, into the mountains.
