Where are you coming from in FL? We moved from Tampa to the NW Cary/Morrisville area 1.5 years ago and agree, it's pretty overwhelming--quite a shock to me for a while (even though I'm a VA native) but in a good way Prepare to be impressed! DM me if you want.
Sent you a DM, thanks!

We've lived in Lochmere for more than 20 years and would vote for the area East of US 1 from Lake Wheeler Road over to Apex and out a couple of miles from Rt 1. One factor is that the access to RTP and downtown is much more reliable than some of the outlying areas. You'd have 1/64, Rt 55, I-40, Tryon Rd and the Cary streets as alternative routes. There is a broad range of price points and lot sizes.

You are on the money here. Based on several conversations with different folks about schools, neighborhoods, lot sizes etc., and based on the criteria laid out in the original post, I think we are going to limit the scope of our search to inside the "box" formed by Tryon Road to the North, Highway 1 or 55 to the west, Lake Wheeler Road to the east, and Hilltop Needmore to the south. I guess Charlton Dude would concur with this strategy (I hope someone gets that joke).

Of course, we would consider anything west of Highway 1 in Apex, but there just doesn't seem to be many options there. Great schools though.

We really like Jamison Park and the Park at Westlake, but I am petrified of the 540 extension and the Water Plant. We also really like High Grove and West Oaks just north of Hilltop Needmore. There are also a few other places off of Optimist Farm Road and Sunset Lake Road. Lochmere, Edinborough, Dutchman Downs, and some places around Lake Wheeler are also in the mix.

Thanks again for the info.

Smile another school search resource

I have heard from another source that schooldigger.com is another good school search tool. Apparently, you can put the address in of the home you like and can bring up all info such as assigned school, test scores, student teacher ratio, growth in recent years, etc. Hope this helps! We are looking to retire in the area next year with our daughter and her family. She is a teacher taking a few years off to enjoy her young triplets so we have a couple years before school enrollment. Good luck with your move!

So, what made you pick Bailey? It's a VERY small town. Will be a big culture shock if you've never lived anywhere smaller than Tampa.

So you're from Tallahassee? I grew up in South FL and went to school in Tallahassee, then worked downtown for the Dept. of State for 2 years before moving to Cary and never looked back. Of course, I mainly saw Tally as an education only, but I didn't like the city as it was too small and in a poor location.

On the other hand, I do miss a bunch of food joints that are locally owned so I can't find them up here.

I'm currently at Cary Crossroads area which is only 2 miles or so from the Tryon/US-64 spot.

im from South FL too and might move there in a few years, im a new grad Registered nurse, and my sister will be graduating next year in nursing too. we might move there in 3 years, so i guess we could afford to get a decent house. me and my sister are both single and we want to get a house near UNC and the durham hospitals, since me and her plan to work in durham (veterans medical center to be exact) and go to UNC for grad school. any decent areas in between? im from South FL and i wonder how much of a culture shock it would be

Not too much of a culture shock really, but you have to be open-minded as RTP area has people from all over the world much like SoFL has a HUGE latin population.

We are mostly moving for the superior educational options for our children, but we have grown tired of the place after 18 years. I am actually from south Louisiana, and my wife is from northwest Indiana. I think she is excited about getting back to experiencing the change in seasons, but without the brutal winter. I have really come to dislike the state of Florida as a whole. Our main office is in Tally, but I work all over the state. I am very excited about opening a new office in Raleigh.

Out of curiosity, what are the local food joints that you miss in Tally? I always felt like it was the worst restaurant city ever. Every year, the locals vote Applebees as the best eatery in town. Seriously.
