I had no idea what hushpuppies were either when I moved here. They also have tater-tots here at a lot of places. I ate those when I was little. Lots of side dishes here, very interesting. The food thing here has taken a while to get used to.
I've still not figured out why, for the love of all that is good and holy, one would put cole slaw on a hot dog.
LOL, My boss here in florida, puts cole slaw on his barbequed pulled pork sandwiches from Sonny's. If any of you ever make it to florida, GOTTA eat some sonnys barbeque !
BBq sandwiches are the best with "slaw," (I've never heard it called coleslaw, except in cookbooks) hot dogs, too. I think slaw on a hot dog is a Carolina thing -- North and South. Order a hot with with "slaw in place (of onions)" --- it's great!!
Hushpuppies sometimes have onions in them, sometimes not. They are good with onions, though. My favorite, though, is cornbread fritters ---fried flat, like my grandma used to make --- not round and deep fried like hushpuppies ---but you never see that in a restaurant. Hushpuppies are usually sweeter (to me) than most cornbread.
Lots of places now serve hushpuppies with honey butter -- ask for it -- so good. If you're really interested in them, I found this link:
We ate at Golden Corral yesterday (I was SOOO excited, hadn't eaten there in years) and I assumed hushpuppies had chicken inside :P Nope. They tasted like stale greasy corn bread, but I assume I just had a bad one
ok if you want real hushpuppies or any authentic southern style food for that matter, check out Joyce's Family restaurant in downtown fuquay. Best hushpuppies in the world. ever.
Sorry but Golden Corral is gross. I think most everything they serve will be less than fresh. You can get some decent hush puppies at Cracker Barrel. I ask for extra in a bowl. Served with honey butter they'd be great, but they are usually pretty oily enough.
