Default Are people friendly (generally) in the triangle area?

Hi folks, I was just considering moving to the triad area in the hopes of (HOPEFULLY, but PROBABLY WON'T BE ADMITTED) attending UNC-Chapel Hill in order to finish the remainder of my undergraduate degree. I currently reside in Colorado Springs, Colorado and can no longer bear the masses of rude, hateful, and anti-social people in this city. Don't get me wrong, in a physical sense, the place is gorgeous, but the people are backwards here IMHO. In fact, I haven't dated ANYONE since moving here because the women act so rude and stuck up. I am a very friendly person so I know that it isn't me that is the problem. I moved out here for a civilian job after getting out of the military back in 2005, got laid off, and subsequently finally got to start my college education here. I grew up in the southeast (Chattanooga and Knoxville, TN areas) and am looking at relocating somewhere closer to home (my mother resides in Knoxville). I know that NC is not the South, but are people still warm and friendly there? Also, I know that Marines are disliked in eastern N.C. (especially the Wilmington and Greenville areas) and was wondering if people would hold that against me since I was FORMERLY one myself and was stationed in Jacksonville, N.C.? Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Mod note: changed title to read "Triangle"

This isn't the Triad. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill is the Triangle. And I think people are quite friendly here, but there are a lot of transplants now so it can be hard to gauge if you're talking to a local or not. I think Military people are quite popular around here as well, and I don't think you being a marine would be negatively received.

A: NC most certainly IS the South
B: This isn't the "Triad", it's the "Triangle". You should change your header if possible, because people will get confused, since the "Triad" is a different area.
C: Yes, people are generally friendly, depending on which area you are in.

Marines are not disliked in the east...pretty much the opposite.

I don't know about CO, but we moved here from SoCal and definitely think the folks here are friendlier. Honestly, when's the last time the checkout girl called you 'sugar' in any other state? I love it!

Maybe the OP meant the Triad and posted to the wrong section?

I've been here in the Triangle 16 years. It's just as friendly as western NY, where I grew up. Chatting with strangers was always part of my life. I still don't know what the big deal is.

I can't imagine a community as a whole being rude. Such wasted energy.

I can't stand to be called "Sugar" by strangers, though -- unless they are over 70 years old. (I'd prefer "Ma'am" any day.) Last time it happened, I bit my tongue trying NOT to say, "No problem, Sweetcheeks."

Of course NC is the South. Egads.

Don't take North Carolina too literally! It's the south! The Triangle is Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. The Triad is Greensbor, Winston-Salem and High Point.
