Unusual Things to do in Raleigh
I have a friend who lives in Ann Arbor, MI- She found this there, which made me wonder what things comparable we have here... any suggestions?
Fairy Doors of Urban Fairies in Ann arbor
On this site Jonathan b. Wright explores the appearance of miniature fairy doors in his house in Ann Arbor and subsequently all around the city. These fairies he calls Urban Fairies. Besides tiny doors there are tiny windows and spaces.

Well, we do have the Barrel Monster. Of course, the way that artist was treated may explain why we don't have a lot of other guerrilla art:

Of course, it does now seem that he has a sponsor, and a girlfriend:

I can't think of any really "unusual" or "unique" things in this area to go to as far as I know, and my husband, son, and I have done a lot of exploring in the area and the surrounding counties. The "talking trees" that a previous poster mentioned are not really talking trees. They are part of a local forest preserve (Clemmons Educational Forest - Clemmons ESF - Home). You push a button on a post situated near a walking trail and a forest service person's recorded voice comes on and tells maybe a 30-second snippet about the particular tree it's situated near. My 4-yr-old got very excited the first time we went there thinking there would actually somehow be "talking" trees and was very disappointed to just see a button on a post which when pushed described the leaves of the tree, etc. Big let-down for a 4-yr-old. LOL He would've loved a fairytale forest type of thing. Unfortunately there's nothing like that for children (or adults) here. Clemmons is very pretty to walk through, though. It's just not what I would call "unique" or 'unusual'----I've been to other places like it in other states.
Never been to the Devil's Tramping Ground thing, but we have no interest----sounds like one of the many Halloween scare-ground type places that are prevalent this time of year.
I look forward to seeing other responses though---we'd love to go investigate some new, truly unique places in the area, if they exist.

The barrel monster is cute, but it isn't something to do (or even see on a consistent basis).
The Devil's Tramping Ground is a circle where grass doesn't grow, so it's just dirt. The website is fun, though.
The trees don't talk.
So -- the answer is still "No."

I think that this area NEEDS unusual things. I've always thought that.
The concept of talking trees sounds wonderful. Someone with some land and technological expertise could rig up about 20 trees along a path -- they could have moving eyes, nose, and mouth, and some with moving arms. They might be manipulated wirelessly and be activated by motion sensors. A few might have web cams and be able to carry on conversations (with someone from a main office).
Then there would be a gift shop.
It would sort of be like Wizard of Oz but not related to Wizard of Oz.
What we really need is more creativity around here.
