We may be in need of replacing our hot water heater. I'd love to know what others recommend in terms of brand to replace with and perhaps a plumber recommendation?

I understand that Rheem and Bradford White are good brands, but State seems to be what most plumbers in the area carry/install.

State water heaters are actually a high quality unit. Also, just an FYI, it's not a "hot water heater" since it's not heating hot water. Technically it's a "cold water heater" but was shortened down to just "water heater".

We have a GE water heater installed back in 2003 purchased from Home Depot and the plumber was me, myself, and I!

You might want to check into going with tankless but it would be more expensive for the initial installation costs. Tankless wasn't very popular back in 2003, but the technology seems to be gaining more positive ground with homeowners today.

For "tank" style water heaters, we install the State brand of water heaters for the following reasons:

1-quality of the product
2-length of the warranty
3-longevity of service life
4-accessible dealer network
5-reasonable return on investment

We install "tankless" water heaters for roughly three times the cost of a "tank" water heater which lasts two to three times longer, provides an unlimited amount of almost immediate hot water, with significant energy savings, and there is no potential "bomb" of water to leak and create an insurance claim for water damage.

We do not recommend Rheem or Ruud.

Hope this helps!
