Doesn't have to be big mountains, just mountain views. What's the closest and how long is the drive to get there?

Asheville will put you in the middle of things. It's at mile marker 50 on I40 - so about 3-1/2 to 4 hours to there.

True - straight up NC86 to the border then US29 toward Charlottesville - you'll see some low mountains as you approach the Charlottesville area.

Asheville and Va are the best. But closer to home you have the Uwharrie mountains (barely mountains) which are West 24/27 before you get to Albemarle, and there is also some beautiful hill-country right out your back door if you drive down 902 toward Asheboro and that area. not mountains, but beautiful farms and hills and stuff. You could go OUT that way, and return on 42, and back up 15/501 for a nice drive.

If you are looking for leaves, they were peaking in boone when I went on Friday. Probably peaking in Asheville this next weekend, probably past prime in VA, and probably a few weeks off on the drive I described above....

Take US 52 N to I77 into virginia. The 5 mile rise up the mountains is absolutely spectacular. Then hook out onto the Blue ridge parkway, and hook back south. About 2 hours to get there.

Thanks for the suggestions. Where do you pick 52 up from Pittsboro?

Go to Winston-Salem and head north up to Hanging Rock State Park, try 66N and surrounding roads up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mountains aren't as far away as you think - prob 1.5 - 2 hrs drive depending on how far you go.

At mile 193 on I-40 in Winston-Salem (or from Business 40 around Winston-Salem also).

Take I-40 to Business I40 just west of Greensboro, then US52 north when you see downtown Winston Salem.
After you pass Pilot Mountain, veer north on I-74 till you hit I-77.
The first 5 miles of I-77 in Virginia rise about 2000 feet, giving spectacular views.
Then get off at Fancy Gap, and head east to US 52. Turn right onto 52, and you'll hit the blue ridge parkway. You can head west to NC89, which will then loop you back to I-74 to return home.
