Default Recommendations for retirement communities, or senior apartments?

My parents currently live in China Grove (which is a tiny town outside of Charlotte). They are getting older, and I'm just not comfortable with them being that far away... If they sell their house, I would like to have them move into a senior community that has some type of help/monitoring. They're not ready for a nursing home or anything, but they could use a nurse checking in on them when I can't be there to make sure they're taking their medicines, etc. Their funding is limited, so we're not looking for anything extremely fancy, but I do want something clean/nice. Any recommendations? Thanks CD!

Hi,

There is a organization in Raleigh that is called "resources for seniors".

Resources for Seniors

If you click on retirement communities, it'll take you to an up-to-date listing of options available in wake county. Not sure if orange and durham counties have something similar.

The resource list describes these types of housing available:

Continuing Care, or Life Care communities offer a full range of living arrangements from independent
living to skilled nursing care housed within the same community. Accommodations may include
cottages, villas, townhomes, apartments, assisted living, and nursing home care. Continuing Care
facilities provide many services for their residents including activities, meals, housekeeping,
transportation and health-related services. These services may be included in a monthly fee or purchased as needed.

The Rental Retirement Communities available in Wake County offer independent apartment and/or
cottage living with meals available in a common dining room. Other services including housekeeping,
linen service, activities and transportation may also be available. Monthly fees vary with the type of
accommodations chosen and the services provided. These communities are strictly private-pay; there is no public assistance or subsidy available.

“Active Adult” Communities
These are communities that are marketed to adults 55 and older, with homes for sale in a subdivision
which may include a clubhouse, pool, and/or other amenities.

Given the expense, my Mom opted for an apartment in a nice apartment complex because she has 'me' around to help her shop and medical appts. <grin> That might be a lower cost option for a little while & then you can use "companians" - various services advertise or friends when you are not around.

Best of luck!

Thanks guys, these really help. I feel so lost in trying to naviagate all this for my parents... I never thought I'd be doing this and dealing with these issues when I'm still in my 20's... sadly my mother is only in her 50's, but was diagnosed with dementia. Consequently things have to change... Anyway, thanks everyone, I'm going to start by checking these recommendations out.

Frank, I think they're also building an Alta on Fayetteville Rd. in Durham (down the road from Southpoint mall).

A good friend was diagnosed with Alzheimers at 53 and it seems like we are hearing younger ages all the time. I respect your decision to help them out but may I suggest right now you put your focus on your father as he will be the primary caregiver and will need so much support. Caregivers tend to burn out very quickly especially when dealing with dementia. Encourage him to seek and take support from lots of different sources. Respite programs are so great for caregivers too. Just some time off from the constant state of alert he has to be in when caring for your Mom can be energizing. Good luck and best wishes.

When I was looking for a place for me and my wife, I looked at a really nice complex here in Charlotte called Shad's Landing. It's part of a nation-wide complex of senior living apartments run by Holiday Retirement:

Holiday Retirement - Holiday Retirement Senior Citizen Housing, Independent Living for Elderly

There's a complex located in Cary.

Oh, and on a side note, you might want to direct your father to the Well Spouse Association:

http://www.wellspouse.org/

They can offer some support to those of us in these types of situations.

Yes, owned by the same company based in the Triad.
I can't comment on the folks running the Durham facility but the folks in N Raleigh have been very good to work with. I'd be happy to share more via PM if interested.

Frank
