I found a job in Greenville and my husband wants to stay with his company in Durham (Page rd exit). Where would be a good location to purchase a home in between Durham and Greenville nc? We are both willing to make a hour or less commute. My husband wants more land than house and I personally dont care as long as the area is safe (we have a one year old son). Is the wilson area our best bet? What are some of the other smaller towns?

How about Mebane? I have a friend who lives there, loves it and commutes to Duke. Her home sits on about 1.5 acres, in a small subdivision.

I think the Wilson area is the best bet, especially if you can find something you like on the west side of town. That makes it just over an hour (with no traffic) to Page Rd and 50-60 minutes to downtown Greenville (you didn't say which side of G-ville you're working on). There's no other town of any size that's as equidistant as Wilson. Finding a house on some land shouldn't be a problem.

Bear in mind that to keep his commute home even remotely near the 1 hour mark, your husband is either going to have to leave work before 4:30 PM or after 6 PM. Otherwise, you can tack on a good 30-50 minutes to that time. If it's possible for him to work 7-4, that would be best for beating the traffic.

Unfortunately, Mebane is in the wrong direction.

I agree with DownEastB about Wilson. It's probably your best bet, although I would not envy your husband his commute to Durham every day from Wilson. There's a lot of nothing, then a lot of Raleigh to get around. The roads are all fine, even great, but the distance, the monotony, and in the Triangle, the traffic, will all be trying for him.

Good luck!

I'd think Wake Forest would be good. You can travel on 98 and get to both cities easily.

Zebulon is about midway between the two. It's right at the 64/264 bypass split. The drive from Zebulon to my house in Cary (near the Harrison Ave. exit) is about 40 minutes. 10 more minutes to Page Rd. Zebulon is about 50 minutes to Greenville. Several nice home locations in the area. Check out Olde Heritage Bldrs. in Zebulon. They have some really nice homes in the Zebulon area, especially at Wakefield Plantation.

Wake Forest is at least 1.5 hours to Greenville and that's only if you don't get caught behind any slow-moving traffic on 96 or 98. I've driven it before...not much fun.

This is where good old paper maps come in handy. Get your official state map of NC - the one DOT puts out. Then get a trusty compass - the kind you used in math way back when. Use the mileage scale on the map and set the compass for the maximum distance you'd each be willing to drive. Then stick the point of the compass on the towns where your jobs are, and draw a circle around each. See where they overlap. That's where to look.
