What are the alcohol laws? How much Road kill? (Raleigh: insurance, condos)

I have two questions to ask.

1.) What are the alcohol laws for beer, wine and the hard stuff?

2.) Is there much road-kill? And how often do you see it along the roads?

I ask these strange questions because it never occured to me to ask before I moved to PA and we have found that you have to buy a CASE of beer (unless you go to a bar to buy a six pack... NOT) at a beer store (like Canada) and you can only buy wine or hard alcohol at a liquor store.

We entertain quite a bit, and many times at the last minute - let me tell you, it is a PITA here!

Road-kill, yeah, about that...... where I live, they just let the other animals at it. IT IS SO DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) In NC, you can buy beer & wine from pretty much anywhere. No CASE minimum (never heard of that one. how stupid). For the harder stuff, you have to go to an ABC store, which is a state-controlled (or maybe even state-run, not sure) liquor store. Prices aren't as good as the liquor stores in states that don't have this policy, but at least the selection is decent.

2) I don't know how NC compares to PA, but i was SHOCKED at the amount of roadkill when I first moved here from SoCal. Granted, SoCal isn't much known for its over-abundance of deer, but geez! It's not so much the quantity of roadkill that bothers me as the overall carnage. 'Roadkill' doesn't even begin to encompass it. 'Road-obliteration' sounds more suitable.

wine and beer are sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, wine shops, etc, no problems there . . except you can't buy any alcohol anywhere before noon on Sundays. For everything else, you have to buy at an ABC store (alcohol beverage control)

The drinking age is 21 for all "spirits".

Liquor is sold only in ABC stores, which are closed on Sunday and close at different evening times. Beer and wine are available at grocery stores or even convenience stores.

Note that NC still has some "dry counties" where alcohol is not sold at all. Most of these are in the western part of the state. There MAY also still be some locailities that don't have "liquor by the drink" in restaurants, i.e. you can take a brown bag with you, but they won't serve you. It was actually not until 1979 that even Raleigh had LBtD!

DWI: .08 is considered "legally drunk" and you will lose your license for a year, plus likely have to do community service, get about a zillion points on your insurance, and it never goes away on your record.

I am not aware of any "minimum" purchase required--when I was in college, many was the time I would collect my pocket change to buy one single beer from a convenience store! There is a "maximum", at least when it comes to liquor from an ABC store, that you can buy without filling out a permit, however.

Regarding road kill: Sadly, probably the biggest culprit is the very growth that brought you here. When forest after forest is torn down to build neighborhoods or condos, the animals that used to live there have to find somewhere else to live, and have to cross roads to get there. I don't think they have GPS for forest animals yet, telling them where the next-closest habitat is, so they wander around best they can, all too often in the path of vehicles.

Lots of roadkill. I see a new one every day. I think we need more hunters and I am a tree hugging animal lover.

You got the story on alcohol already ... the story on road kill is incomplete. Yes there are a lot of animals killed on the roads here - mainly because a lot of animals live here. But while they do get killed, they are (at least the large ones) removed from the roadsides.

Deer are very numerous here. It can be dangerous to drive in the early morning hours in many locations.

I have never seen more dead deer on the sides of roads in my life. On my way to work one morning last fall, I (honestly) saw 8 dead deer between Cary and Durham (Rts 55 and 147).

Those of us who do not live in the boonies do not see a lot of roadkill.

I don't live in the boonies, and I see it quite often!!!! Not on city streets, but on 440, 40, etc. I see it daily.

We see the roadkill mainly in the RTP/Durham/Raleigh areas that have been built up. Wherever there is a lot of development is where we tend to see the roadkill. There simply is no place for them to go. We see very little roadkill where we live in the SW Raleigh/NE Fuquay-Varina area. The homes are not packed as tight as they are further north. There is much more land available for the deer to occupy, due to the spacing of the homes and preservation of land. We see them walking through the woods and sometimes our yard all the time. They don't get hit as much because they have so much area to hide in. As a tree hugging animal lover, I wish we would develop the Triangle more like we have done in this area, so our animal friends would have more space.
