In Toronto, I don't owe or need a car...if I work at Duke University, which neighbour I can live in so that I can either walk, bike or bus to work and still have a gay lifestyle (feeling safe in my neighbour)?
What is it like living in Durham vs. Raleigh and seriously how are the men? I am a single male looking to settle down, not into the bar scenes-- where do I have a man in your city?
I have a million questions, and looking for a change....is your city a good start?

There are parts of Durham you can live in and not need a car. It depends on whether you are looking for an apartment or planning to buy/rent a house. It does help to have a car as this area is pretty spread out, but it's more important in Raleigh which is really spread out. There are areas of Durham like Trinity Park and Old West Durham where you could probably commute to work by bike when the weather is good. I live in North Raleigh but many times I wish I had bought a place in Durham. My partner and I picked our area because we think the houses prices will go up more here than in Durham after a few years. Durham is a pretty nice place, and we spend a lot of time there, more than we spend in downtown Raleigh.
You won't have any problem being a gay male. Durham (and Chapel Hill) are pretty accepting. I think you will find plenty of social groups in the area. If you end up moving here, send me a PM and I will send you links to some of the gay social groups in the area that I know about. I don't know much about Toronto but I think you will find this an interesting area. Durham & Chapel Hill have great universities, lots going on intellectually speaking. There are lots of outdoor activities here, and chances to go biking, hiking, kayaking etc.
Also make sure you search this forum because there are a lot of older posts that will help you. Search on the word "durham" and you'll see which ones are about living here. Many of the older posts have some very good info which will answer most of your questions.
The one piece of advice I would give you is to not come here without a job. The market is not very good and it could take you 3-9 months or more to find something here. It's hard to do if you don't have a lot of connections. You are better off getting a job offer before you make the move down here. Good luck!
