Yes, folks do smoke more here....that is not good...but it's not everywhere and it's possible to learn where to avoid and where to go. PS: NC isn't the only state with sunday liquor laws...Ohio is the same way. |

Funny, when I made my first visit in January, the smoking situation didn't even enter my mind (hailing from MA). We went to a great restaurant (Rockfish Grill? I think...) and were stunned by the smoke factor. They had smoking in the bar, and non-smoking in part of the restaurant, which was essentially one big room. We schmoozed with the host for a while (as there was a wait) and the table they initially seated us at was intolerable for me--I too have an adverse reaction, get wheezey, can't stand the smell, etc. I asked to move (which meant more of a wait) and I expected to be stuck somewhere equally bad, after waiting longer. But wouldn't you know it they gave us what in my opinion was the best table in the house! It was the furthest away from the bar/smoke, the service was impeccable, everyone was friendly and eager to sway us towards moving to NC, and the food was really good. Nonetheless, we learned a lesson about what to look for and where not to go...NC feels light years behind the rest of the country (at least NY, MA, and CA) as far as smoking goes.

I can't say there's anything unique about NC. It just depends on which state you're coming from.

LOLBTW, while I was in the Triangle I stopped at a chain type restaurant for lunch. It was just me and my 4 year and I really did not have a grasp on where I was thus picked the first thing that looked like it work. They had a smoking and non-smoking set up. So I asked for the manager and very politely explained that while I realized that he was not responsible for the smoking and non-smoking set up, but my family would not be eatting at that restaurant until they changed to non-smoking. I vote with my dollars and politely let the owners/mangers know about it. And I did thank him for taking a minute to listen to my concerns. |

We have found several chain restaurants that don't allow smoking, i.e., Red Robin and Perkins to name two. We might try a place once, but if the ventalation isn't good, we don't go back and we politely let the manager know why. With all the folks coming in from so many places around the country, who won't tolerate smoking it shouldn't be too long before NC has to wake up. Are the tobacco folks subsidized or funded to plant other crops than tobacco? I frankly don't see many tobacco fields around, but then maybe I don't know what tobacco really looks like. Have seen some young grape orchards, and wonder if they once were tobacco fields?

I saw on one of the newscasts several months ago that this is exactly what's happening. The farmers are turning to growing grapes as tobacco profits have decreased.

They also had shifted to growing tomatoes and peppers.
Guess it's also more of a heritage thing when it comes to the tobacco and the smoking laws. |

Orange County has restrictions on smoking in any place that serves food. You either have to have special ventilation or a completely closed off section. Also, if you're ever in Greensboro looking for a great steakhouse, there is a Fleming's there and they don't allow any smoking.
