Older couple looking for a home with limited commute to RTP (say 15-20 min), modest home (1800-2000 sf), could have small lot but with mature trees. Would like to stay in the 175-225 K range. No kids so schools less important except for resale. Prefer quieter neighborhoods but reasonable access to groceries and other services (within 3 miles or so). Any suggestions would be welcome!

we live in North Raleigh (Strickland/Six Forks area).

Lots of homes in that area fit that description if you don't mind a fairly suburban setting.

I was going to suggest just south of Southpoint mall, where we live, but the houses there are closer to $250K and up. I commute to RTP every day from there and it takes me 10 minutes. I guess you could also try to find one of the older homes (built in the 90's) in the area, they might be a bit cheaper.

Woodcroft in SW Durham meets all of your qualifications. Definitely worth checking out.

S Durham
Parkwood and other neighborhoods off Grandale Rd.
Might find something in the Meadows of Pagehurst. Trees are hit and miss, but good location.
Ashley Forest off Lumley Rd.

Ditto on Woodcroft as Danielle says.

Woodcroft is great. Used to live there.

This house can probably be negotiated down at this point. It's a great old growth neighborhood.

+...... ( i dunno, i can't count) for Woodcroft. it definitely has that old growth you want. of course, this assumes you want a subdivision. there is a HOA, but it's a pretty lax one from my experience.

there's a wide variety of housing in Woodcroft, everything from 5+ bedroom single family in the $350K+ range to condos. lots are generally decent size (especially by new homes standards). there are countless grocery stores in a 3 mile radius as well as lots of good shopping. schools are OK (from what i've read).

Mike
