Does anyone know what was going on in the woods off of Westgate Rd between the Post Office and the turn onto Ebenezer Rd yesterday? On Friday (Dec 4th) there were many police cars parked along the road and a section of the woods was taped off with yellow tape about 200 ft into the woods. They were there from at least 3pm-ish until after 7:30pm. Once it was dark they had a big spotlight shining into the woods. Everyone was gone by 10pm. We went by this morning and the tape has been removed too.

I can't find a thing about what was going on. Does anyone here know what they were doing?

I saw that too! I've been curious to see if any news coverage would mention it. Hmm...weird.

I found out today. A man hung himself there. He had been there all day. I think it hasn't been posted because he hasn't been identified to notifiy any family members.

Why would that need to be in the news anyway? A person killing themselves is news? Why would anyone even want to read about that?

Actually I shouldn't have said he "hung" himself. I am making an assumption there. He was found hung. Maybe someone hung him? Either way, it is not uncommon for deaths to be written about in the paper. When I see tons of police parked along the road and yellow crime tape in the woods less than 1/4 mile from my house, I am kind of curious. Lots of people in my neighborhood were wondering what was going on.

Generally speaking, the news media does not cover suicides unless the person is a celebrity, elected official or is somehow noteworthy in the community

That can change if there are extenuating circumstances such as a murder-suicide, or the person killed themselves in a very dramatic or public fashion.

I don't think OP was suggesting this suicide needed to be in the news just that whatever happened might possibly be in the news since at the time what happened was unknown to OP. I would have been curious too and would have looked to news outlets to see if I could find out what happened.

I wonder how the economy is affecting the local suicide rate.

I'm sure if you or your neighbors were in any type of danger you'd be informed. I think it's safe to assume that unless you own the property this occurred on it's nobody's business.
