A few years ago we hired a local guide who gave us an excellent tour of the south of France. She was a dual major - Art History and Law which gave her a solid background for the region.

We have traveled to Europe numerous times and have used Rick Steves' books as guides. His advice is spot on, economical, and fun. You might find you can do as well as or better than a travel agent using his books. The few times we tried to venture away from his books on our own didn't turn out so well, but I can't say that about his own advice. We have had some of the most memorable times of our lives thanks to those books.
