Default Cost of high speed internet

What are the costs for high speed internet in the Raleigh, Chapel Hill area? Any recommendations for providers?

Here is a good place to start:

There are not too many options but they can range anywhere from ~$15 up.

My roadrunner went up $5 on this bill to $54, but I called them and they lowered it to $44 when I complained nicely.

TWC can probably give you a good deal if you sign up (or if you bundle with cable/phone). But understand, once you pass the 6 month or year mark and are charged full price...it gets pricey. Without TWC cable/phone...Roadrunner (7.0mbps) will cost you $55/mo plus taxes. It's still like $50 with a bundle package.

Your best bet is to hope your area can receive AT&T's Uverse. If not...you'd probably be best looking into Earthlink...they've got a $30/6 months offer right now and is about $13 cheaper per month than TWC's Roadrunner. It is also the same exact service as Roadrunner...same lines, same setup, and TWC bills you on behalf of Earthlink.

Your last choice is probably HughesNet satellite internet...which is both pricey and a bit impractical (huge dish on the side of your house, which may look silly if you've got Dish/DirecTV already.

We have Earthlink broadband from TWC. It's still hanging in there at about 45/month including all the taxes and crap. Have had the same setup for years and they haven't significantly raised our rates yet, but now that I've said something.....sssshhh.

19.99 verizon DSL Lite.

27.05 TWC Lite.

29.95 TWC regular speed with new sign on (1yr). Just cancel for a month then they will offer you this rate.

Earthlink lite 24.95.

If you are just browsing the web I recommend lite versions. If you are downloading movies, music playing games go with the regular speeds.

I've had lite for 2 years and it works fine.

Verizon's DSL service is regularly priced at $29.99. It's 3Mbps down and 768Kbps up, more than enough for what most people do. This is what we have and have no complaints.

I constatly stream Netflix movies, download large files, and backup data to an online site and have found no issues with my service as yet (we've had it since July).

Don't be fooled by TWC/Earthlink/ATT. I'd say that 99% of people don't need those speeds they charge so much for 99% of the time. Now, if you're a torrents fool who has to download 3 movies simultaneously while surfing the web, adding big attachments to email, streaming movies to your TV, and playing video games ALL AT THE SAME TIME, then you should pay for the higher speeds. But, you probably will see no difference at speeds above 3Mbps if you're a normal user.

My wife and I had Comcast in VA and we had their 8Mbps connection. We haven't noticed a difference or decrease in speed with our 3Mbps connection at all.
