My wife and I are (finally) getting away for the weekend from Richmond, VA (and the kids:-) area and visiting Raleigh (we've never been). I want to take her out for a nice dinner one night somewhere local.

WE WANT TO GO TO SOMEPLACE THAT'S NOT A CHAIN, SOMEWHERE LOCAL TO RALEIGH. To compare, places we like that are chains up here, as far as the atmosphere goes - Bonefish, PF Changs, and when we've been able to afford it, Ruth's Chris....doesn't have to be overly romantic, but a nice, quiet place where a couple can enjoy themselves and the mood. Not looking for eclectic or trendy!

Ideas for somewhere to eat out?????

Thanks in advance!

We have all the chains here. You can pretty much find them all in the Cratree Valley or North Hills area. In addition, Crabtree has some nice places you did not name such as Fleming's Steakhouse (Ruth's Chris style dining), McCormick & Schmick's and Bro Tuscan Grille.

then there's:

and many more.......

You could try the Oxford on Fayetteville St., Fins (pretty fancy but great seafood), The Pit (some regular NC BBQ, and also some more upscale dishes)...

Also consider 18 Seaboard and the Tavern at Second Empire.

The Angus Barn is a famous steak house located on Glenwood Avenue.

Casa Carbone is a family owned Italian restaurant...my favorite.

Second Empire in downtown Raleigh is wonderful and very unique. It's pricey, but there are 2 sections. Upstairs is very romantic and quiet (and $$$). The Tavern is still very nice (not like a tavern!) and the food is delicious, and for dessert they have chocolate souffle which is to die for. (Wish I had plans to go there soon....) Have a nice evening! Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern -

Jibarra (http://www.jibarra.net/raleigh_downtown/index.php - broken link)downtown in the historic depot building has a nice atmosphere. They serve "modern" Mexican dishes and have a nice tequlia menu.

I second 18 Seaboard or 518. The Oxford is also good, if a bit less romantic. It is billed as a "gastropub", which is an upscale version of a pub.
