Default Alternative internet service [other than timewarner]

Hi,

Recently Timewarner changed my internet bill from 39 to 49, by the way it was only 29 in 2008.

I'm fed up with it and I have two questions please.

1.What other highspeed internet service option are available in chapel hill?
2.To cancel all time warner cable service, they send a technician to pick up your modem and charge you 19.95 for it. Can I personally return the modem to them and save the 19.95

Depending on where in Chapel Hill, does ATT offer DSL?

Yes, go into the office and return it. Save yourself the time and money.

This comes up a lot, I wish there was a better answer. If a viable alternative does ever come along, people will be leaving TWC in droves.

I have been in my new house for 2 weeks and TWC still cannot provide me an installation date. Apparently, as it is new construction, my address is not in their system which seems to really confuse them. This, despite the fact that my house is completely pre-wired for cable and every one of my neighbors already has it. Sooner or later, one of them is going to get sick of me hijacking their Wi-Fi!

Some providers offer "naked" DSL ... DSL w/o a landline. Too bad ATT doesn't.

You could order broadband from Earthlink but TWC will be the "underlying carrier". Not sure what Earthlink charges these days ...

Double check again... I live off Lake Wheeler Rd south of Raleigh and according to their site, I can get just DSL, but I can only get 3M down, 384K up, which would be tight for what I need. I am kind of fed up with Time Warner Cable as well. I moved a year ago from NY and my price with Time Warner (been a customer for over 10 years) went up by about 40% here in NC, and in NY I had telephone service with them included which I don't have in NC. So they are definitely gouging NC customers big time. The other service I'm looking at is ClearWire's Clear 4G. It seems to be highly dependent on what kind of signal you can get, but I'm seeing reports on the net of people getting consistent 6M down and 700K up with them, and they have some great prices at this point.

Unless the plans are REALLY different across the state, you should be able to get AT&T Fast-Access DSL for:

Fast Access DSL Direct 1.5M for 37.95. This is the one I chose.
Fast Access DSL Direct 3.0M for 42.95.
Fast Access DSL Direct 6.0M for 47.95.

When I researched this a month ago, there were no options that came even close to TWC in Cary.

DTV Satellite internet - pricey
AT&T - not avail
DSL - not avail
Clear/MiFi/etc - pricey
