I've just realized that my NC car registration is several months expired (i'm referring to the big inspection tag on the front windshield and my license plate tag). This will be my first time renewing in this state and I'm not sure where/what to do as I have no paperwork. I don't recall getting anything in the mail prior to it expiring. Shouldn't I have? I've never let registration lapse before... In CA we'd get clearly marked statements from the Dept of Motor Vehicles (DMV) saying it was time to renew and this is what you owe. I usually just took that paper to our local AAA office and paid it there (a convenient service to members) and right there they'd hand me my up-to-date registration paper and the license plate tag. How is it done here?

just go to a Jiffy Lube or any place that does car inspections and have it inspected.
Registration (even late) can be done online: (get inspected first)

You should have received a registration renewal in the mail. I would contact DMV.

Once you get the car inspected and it passes, you will later get the registration in the mail. Go get an inspection, and you'll get your license tag bill, and then tag, in the mail.

The only potential wrinkle here is a "block" due to non payment (or perceived non payment) of property tax on the vehicle. DMV will tell you if that exists.

Get it inspected and then take the inspection paper to the DMV and have them renew your tags. It isn't such a big deal. The problem is if you get hit with the $125 fine for letting your inspection lapse. I do not remember there being a fine or penalty for the tag not being renewed. Just don't get pulled over by the popo.

I sill got a registration renewal notice - before I had my car inspected/before the registration expired.

So I can just go to an inspection place with no renewal notice or letter? Don't I need some paperwork?

Did you move/change addresses? not to scare you or anything.....When my daughter didn't get a car inspected, she ended up with a $275 fine (including interest) because she waited way too long on the inspection ....new procedure/law you have to get it inspected and renew the tag, but they are no longer putting a sticker on the windshield; you get a printout after the inspection and it's highly recommended that you hold on to it

The DMV can look you up with your license plate letters/numbers. They do send out license plate/tag renewal notices, I just got one a few days ago.

Hmm I haven't moved. Who does the renewal letter come from? Which agency?
