So I'm planning on hosting a co-ed bridal shower for my best friend this spring. My hope is to have a cookout, hopefully with space to spread out and play cornhole, etc, but we want to include alcohol (we're trying to get the boys involved, so that seems like a must ). Obviously the best solution would be a backyard, but everyone attending will either be a) from out of town or b) living in an apartment. I lived in Chapel Hill, but I'm in Charlotte now, so I just can't think of any place that would accommodate. I'm trying to avoid renting a space if I can help it. I know that's a tall order, but any help would be appreciated!

I'm thinking that the public parks aren't going to allow alcohol.

I'm not even going to ask what that is.

None of the public parks or public facilities will allow alcohol. The exception is the city of Raleigh, which will require you to sign your life away. Also, these park facilities are rather expensive to rent, so that's 2 strikes against them.

I would suggest 3 options:
1) You don't say where you want to hold this event (you mention Chapel Hill though), but if you are willing to consider Apex/Cary, there is a private park on Penny Rd that the owners rent for picnics. The rent is about $300 per day. You can PM me for info.

2) Many of the communities around here, especially near where I live in southern Wake county, have community centers. These are generally 1960's era buildings with kitchenettes and tables. An example would be the Swift Creek community center on Ten Ten Rd. This will also cost you to rent it out.

3) Find someone who lives in an apartment or subdivision that has a clubhouse which you can reserve. Again, you will pay a deposit and rental fee.
