Sheds/Workshops Question
Hey there...we just went under contract for a house, but there is little in the way of storage. We were thinking about getting a shed/workshop sort of deal in our nice big backyard. We are wary of the metal home depot types (I remember it being more difficult to open the sliding doors on my grandpa's to get the lawnmower than it was actually mowing his yard). I'm interested in possibly getting one built. I've found a couple of folks in Raleigh that build sheds/barns/etc. Anybody have any experience with a local builder? What about wood frame prefab jobs?
Basically, I'm looking for something that I can run electricity to with space for the lawnmower, bikes, and a workbench for the tools. The yard is super flat, so I don't think that there will need to be minimal leveling at the most.

I really like the folks at Carolina Yard Barns. Buildings built on your site.
Good people.
Lots of photos on their website.

Be sure to check you covenants, if you have any, for requirements, size restrictions, color, placement, etc.

Yest. Lots of neighborhoods have restrictive covenants. I know in my neighborhood in Cary it is a definite NO NO. If you want a shed you need to make it attached to your home to make it look like part of the house. So I would definitely check before you go out and purchase one.

One reason I recommended a great shed builder, is I know they have put sheds into the historical districts successfully.
If they can run that gauntlet, they will work OK with the HOA.

We're moving into the neighborhood just northeast of Oakwood Cemetery. Not the big super nice historic district, but the streets named after presidents that are lined with nice little 1940s ranchers. I don't think that HOA and whatnot will come into play. I wouldn't suspect it in that type of neighborhood, but should I forsee a problem? They just slapped a wood fence up in the yard of my new house.

I suspect that for the best results you should "AskMisterBrown."

BTW--what would one call that area? It's a little niche bounded to the north by Glascock, to the east by N State St. and St. Augustine College, to the west by Oakwood Park, and to the south by the cemetery and the college. From what I can tell, Historic Oakwood stops at the cemetery and the park (its easternmost border). Oakdale seems to be to the northwest of this area, and Oakwood appears to extend east from Historic Oakwood but stops at the cemetery/campus (as its northernmost border). Does that make sense? Anybody know what area I'm talking about?

I do....not sure what it's called but I drive through there to get to the dog park. It's a nice little neighborhood.....smaller urban homes....to be honest, it reminds me a lot of the 'in town' area of the small town I grew up in.
There are some clunkers...but lots of cute homes and lots of potential...and talk about location!!
