We are looking for a Christian church in the Raleigh and Cary area that has intense adult Bible and theology study. Examples of "intense" include study of the Gospel of Thomas, using The Five Gospels (from Jesus Seminar), and detailed study of Matthew (including Q, Matthew-only, and Markan sections). Examples of theology would include study of Paul Tillich's writings as well as contemporaries such as Marcus Borg, Bishop John Shelby Spong, and UNC's Bart Ehrman.
We need a church that permits open examination and review of scholarly research. It would be great to find a minister who is familiar with some of the above.

Any inputs would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not sure if you are going to find that in Raleigh, but I'd start here: Progressive Churches.org

Of that list, I think Pullen Baptist or Binkley Baptist in Chapel Hill might be the best bet (both are NOT Southern Baptist).

I'm only familiar with the Jesus Seminar because I had a minister who was a fellow of it when I lived in MN. I didn't see a lot of discussion of it when I was church shopping in Raleigh.

I know it takes all kinds to make a world, but this just struck me kind of funny (and I'm gay...and Conservative)... Isn't that something of a cultural oxymoron?

Default Thanks

J Lurk,

I am familiar with the progressive churches site and also Pullen. But will give the church in Chapel Hill a try. Thanks much,
