If it is because they were going bald, why so many men as opposed to other places I have lived, i.e., AZ and TX? Just curious ...

I'd say this is more an "in the past 3 years" thing than a "Raleigh" thing. You'd have to compare other metros in 2010 in Raleigh in 2010, not other places in 2007 with Raleigh 2010.

Weird, I don't know a single bald man in the area and don't really recall seeing any recently. Maybe I just don't notice these things...?

In many parts of the country men wear ball hats ALL THE TIME! The ball hats hide their receding hairlines. It is possible that better manners are evident in Raleigh which strongly discourages wearing of grungy ball hats in restaurants and indoors. Hence, men who are bothered by premature hair loss shave their heads rather than cover them with a ball cap.

And to the ladies. If you think wearing a ball hat will hide the fact you haven't washed your hair in two (or more) days, you are mistaken!

A cleanly shaved head is much more preferable than the attempt to disquise it with the dreaded "comb-over" - OMG!

Maybe the southern states (AZ & TX where the OP has lived) have fewer shaven heads due to sun exposure... I have not seen sunscreen specifically for the pate, but sounds like a niche market if anyone is looking to put out a new product!

It is kind of interesting. All of my friends with shaved heads (most of which I met when I moved to Raleigh in '06) look really good without hair. In fact, I have never even seen pictures of most of them with hair on their heads, and I can't even imagine them with hair. I think they look great!
